Just did a deal on a ebay Cat-22. The boat and trailer were pretty cheap but needs some work. It has two jibs and one (original) main. Boat was originally owned by an older gent in James Island SC (Charleston SC area) and second owner Lost the SC title! So... Other problems first. Keel is a Major chunk of Rust! Need sugestions on sand-blasting and solving that problem first. The second owner I bought the boat from said it's a 1986 but I'm unsure. The second Jib is a Shuler marked 11-82 so I'm not sure if it's a 1986 or not. The hull number is 10212 (main sail and Catalina ID plate). Any web sites or information would be helpful. Thanks, Mike

With that Hull number, I doubt you have an '86. But there are ways to tell. In '86 Catalina changed a few things. Do you have a pull out galley or a stationary one. I believe it was '86 when they switched to the stationary one. My hull number is 12452 and it's a 1984. The C22 National Association has some resources that will help you. First, sail numbers article will give you info on age: http://www.catalina22.org/techtips/sailnumbers.htm Once you determine the age, you can get a manual here: http://www.catalina22.org/manuals/index.htm A more seasoned sailor will need to help you with your other questions.

boat

hello mike,remove the rust with a 4inch angled grinder ( about $ 20.00 ). here in the land of fruits and nuts,the trailer has to be registered as well as the boat, so, get a bill of sale for the boat and one for the trailer from the last owner ( who may not have had it registered into his own name, in which case, you will have to get one from the person he bought it from) your dept. of motor vehicles may trace the license plate on the trailer to the last owner. DON"T SPEND ANY MONEY ON IT UNTIL THE REGISTRATION IS IN ORDER. good luck john

Trailer reg

Trailer registration laws differ from state to state. Don't assume it must be registered, ask your county government first. In Kentucky and Ohio only one of the 2 must be registered, unless you transport the boat out of state.

Thanks all for the answers. In SC there's no regisration for trailers. The galley is Missing! But it was a pull-out type. Any possibility of replacing it? (or building one?) Mike "Put On Your Sailin' Shoes"

Year of mfg. on transom

All boats built after 1970, I beleive, are required to have a hull indentification number imposed into the outside upper top right transom. This number has a manufacture's number, the hull number of the vessel, and the month and year of manufacture. The month of manufacture is a letter code by the manufactuer, and precise interpretation of that is a bit cloudy, although there is good reference on the Catalina 22 National Sailing Association web site. The final two digits of this federally required hull indentification numder are the year of manufacture. I beleive yours will be probably be 82 or possibly 81. Note that a boat can be built in one year as a subsequent model year boat. For example, my C-22 #9911, has 81 as the year of manufacture, however, it is considered a 1982 model year boat and consequently had to meet the federal requirements for boats built after December 31, 1981. Specifically to this size boat, lights are required, and mine does indeed have lights. I am fairly certain your have a 1982 model boat, however, if constructed in late 1982, it may be a 1983 model boat. If for some reason this number is obliterated, you may have trouble registering this vessel. However, I think you should contact whatever authority registers boats in your state for precise instructions as to what to do in such a case.

Galley

Mike I don't think it would be difficult to build one. If you like I can take some pics and forward them to you. Many sailors have used other means for "galley" features. I've read on this site about those that have used a microwave and grill instead of the stove for example. I ran across a portable sink this past weekend in a camping store. It didn't hold 10 gallons like my galley but it would work in a pinch. The galley is a 10 gallon holding tank about 3.5 feet long that is framed in wood and paneling. There is a pump-style faucet and a sink that drains into rubber or plastic tubing. This tubing is aligned with the funnel-shaped hole in the starboard settee. This drains through a through-hull into the lake, river, ocean. You've probably found the valve's to open and close the through-hull in the panel under the keel winch crank. There are 2 valves, one for the galley and the other for the cockpit drains.

yours is an '81 model

Mike, Congrats on the new purchase. Hope your new boat brings you as many rewards and lessons as mine has. As for you hull/sail #, yours was build in late '81. A link at the bottom will give you some more info on the topic. As for the galley, many people actually find that it takes up more room than it's worth, but if you have to have one, and can't find one for sale, I have plans I can email to you. Contact me at caydreamin@yahoo.com and I can send them to you. I built a table that fits in the cockpit. It's perfect for a coleman stove with a gas grill, burner and griddle. This is much more convenient and versatile. The table also serves as a place to eat, for food prep and is handy for the occasional game of cards. Have fun, jb

Boat registration

Be sure that you register both the boat and the trailer, if you don't have to register the trailer at least obtain the title or bill of sale for it. In Washington State I had to do a pretty lengthy search for the previous trailer owner, three owners ago, just to throw the darned thing in the dump! Had to prove I was the sole owner of the trailer. Throw the sliding galley away. It's a mess and really inconvenient. Go with a camp stove and camp water bag. We set it up on a specially made board set between the port and starboard benches in the cockpit. Works like a champ and no food and smells in the boat. Just my preference, but I gained a whole new storage area for jump (clothes) bags. Campy

More Info--->

Thanks again for the help! I spent the evening yesterday pressure washing the teak and top of the cabin. Hey, it's starting to look much Better! NOTE; If You're Using a Pressure Washer, Don't Try Washing Your Feet! I made the mistake of making a wide pass that included part of my left foot... Humm, yea it hurt and and it looks like road rash today. Pressure washing the teak was a trick. It cut the black color off like it was butter (and the hide off my foot). Kitchenet? Not so worried about it right now. But I figured it wasn't any big deal. My salin' pal rode over yesterday and he said it was OK for what I paid. He checked the sails and said one jib was a 150 and the other a 130. I need to source some mis. hardware if someone has suggestions. There's a West Marine at the beach and I have one of their thick catalogs. Serial number? OUCH, I can't read it! It looks like CTY 0212 81 1 (From the ser. # link it's missing the "H" and what else I don't know). I plan on calling Catalina Thursday. Thanks, MSC

Re:Getting Number

I tried sanding it (Mistake!) thinking that maby it had been painted, rubbed it with Lacquer thinner, used a Sharpie marker on it and then tried to read it using a loupe. The number was very lightly stamped. I sent Catalina an email and will call SC Natural Resources with the SC number on the side. They should be able to pull it up on their system and locate the Hull ID number. Price? I paid $2,000.00. Looking better every day. :) Mike

No Pressure Wash

I'd advise against pressure washing the boat as a high pressure washer can damage the teak (removing the soft grain) and the fiberglass if held too close. Time for some elbow grease!

New Development---->

While in search of an outboard for the Cat, I found a second boat, 1981 22 Catalina w/roller furler, brand new spinnaker, new cusions, trailer and it has a 2001 5 hp Honda 4 stroke (long shaft) motor. The asking price was $3950.00. I hit it off real well with the owner and he dropped the price to $3200.00. I gave him a grand deposit and will pick it up Monday! As soon as I get the paper work on the 1982 that I started out with, it's going on good 'ol ebay. Mike
