I've used cheap indoor-outdoor carpet for the small floor area on my boat and have the same problem of the backing turning to dust. The carpet dries quickly and doesn't mildew but when you pick it up there is a thick coating of sand-like dust on the fiberglass.
Our local Menard's building center carries "Brazilian" teak for house decks at a relatively reasonable price. I am going to try ripping some some into slats to make a (sort of) grate.
A cheaper alternative might be flexible vinyl planks that interlock in the same way that laminate flooring does.
I put down vinyl that looks like tile then in one area I will need to put carpet because the floor isn't level. I do like the wood tiles. But it takes my head room away.
I was looking for a material like carpet to use on the seats of my new (wick'd old) dinghy so I went to either Lowe's or Home Repo. They're always right across the street from each so I can't be sure which it was. Anyway, there are a number of runners available by the foot. There are also a few that are rubber pads of various colors that should be non-slip on both sides and relatively attractive. I'm not sure about the inside of the sailboat but my little dinghy will be sporting some of it come springtime. It might be worth a look.
