Just wanted to say hi - I'm a new owner of a 1984 Catalina 30. This is the first sailboat I've owned and I am looking forward to spending a lot of time on these forums to get clues and ideas from everyone.

I have tons of questions, but I get to those eventually. This weekend is the first real sail with her - approximately 67 miles from Sodus Point, NY to Kent, NY...

Welcome and Congratulations. I've had my 1984 Catalina 30 for one and a half years and she's a great boat. Enjoy your boat and this site. Ask a lot of questions. Great people and great info on this site.

Would you mind sharing about how much you paid for the sailboat. I am trying to budget for a sailboat purchase next year for the similar time period Catalina.

Congradulations. Great boat. She is very forgiving and you will do well by learning the ropes on her.

You are gonna be like a proud "Papa"! Or should I say you just purchased a super model! It's a little of both, you love playing with the little kid but you want to buy her everything and everything is out there! It’s also kinda like having a Harley, buying the boat is the cheap part. You basically start making her your own by customizing it and hanging new stuff all over her! My problem or should I say my wife’s problem is I have both and she has finally given me an ultimatum! Is there a thread that explains how deal with this????? Congrat's and what a weekend to get her, have a blast!!!!

Thank you all...

Thank you all for the responses....

She has the M25 diesel onboard, and I have seen tons of sites dediated to these.

My main goal is to get it over to her new home tomorrow, not sure if the weather will cooperate all that much, but the yacht club is kicking me out so I don't have much of a choice!!!!

She needs some TLC across the board - the head, bildge pump, depth and knot meters, but she is a very sound boat with no soft spots. The Surveyor didn't find too much wrong with her other than small things.

Thanks again everyone!

I've had an 84 C22 and C27, I guess C30 is the natural progression here. You'll love the boat, easy to maintain. the things you listed to work on are easy so don't sweat it.

Congratulations and welcome, I just attended the Catalina Rendezvous, on Thetis Island BC, last weekend, the oldest boat there was a 1977 C30, and it looked real good, just got back today from a sail to Keats Island, and to Bowen Island.
Post up some pics.

Trip was a success, but...

Made the 65+ mile trip in 9 hours. We motored her the entire way, basically because we would have been headed directly into the wind all day long and it was supposed to storm, so we didn't want to delay.

Only question I have for you folks right now is that she pulls hard to port, if you let go of the wheel, she immediately goes to port hard.

I noticed this sailing her last weekend, but I definately notcied it coming across this trip.

Is this something common that I need to get used to or an issue. I did have a survey done, nothing was noted on the rudder being bent...

Do a search, either here or on Google on the phrase "prop walk" It is NORMAL you do not have a problem.

Stu -

Thanks for the info - this would definately explain whats happening while the diesel is running, but should this be happening while under sail?

i wouldn't say this is normal.. prop walk is most felt in reverse, and its the boat turning on itself, not rudder resistance.. sounds like his is in fwd at all speeds.. i have very little steerage resistance at any speed in fwd on my MKII..

the only thing i could think of that would cause this is a misaligned rudder OR the prop is off of center and the thrust is hitting more of one side of the rudder than the other.. it could have been him fighting the wind but since it sounds like he was nose on all day that's probably not it.

Does she sit level in the water? if shes listing that could cause it..

Billy -

You have really pointed out what is going on - the boat is turning by itself to port. and it happens whether I'm running the diesel or sailing....

i question the rudder alignment. not sure what else could cause that.. other than a twisted keel, and that would be odd..
