New C&C 33 Mk1 owner who will base in Portland Oregon

Hi all C&C owners! I am now the proud owner of a 1975 C&C 33 Mk1 "Yellowtail". I will be moving her to her new berth in Portland, Oregon in a couple of weeks and it would be great to share with other C&C owners or Portland or Vancouver WA sailors for support and sailing fun. I am a newbie with a very experienced brother and a developing passion for sailboats. I appreciate any advice and I would enjoy sharing pics and learning from your lessons.

Well it is keep Portland Weird, right? Also she's an Electric boat so Green as well! Thanks for the welcome, I intend to post a lot because there are so few C&C 33 Mk1 posts here. Will be sailing it from downriver in Washington to Hayden Island Marina on the 17th hopefully...

Great. Hayden Island has a cool bar on the river. Not bad on a sunshine day when the the beer is cold.

As I posted for a Catalina new buyer today, electric motors have a cool factor. Certainly with the marina providing power they can get out in and out to sail on the river. Where they do not impress is in having enough storage to always be ready to pull/push a boat off a lee shore or out of a bridge that is getting nearer as the river current carries you a long without any wind.

The corollary to my above statement, is that a diesel auxiliary is no good if it is not Vrooming. As my post about the "little engine that couldn't" reports my boat is stuck in a marina.

I will be looking forward to following your adventures.

Yes, i've had a beer there...nice. I just purchased a 3500 watt generator and will make the boat a hybrid so I always have power on demand, also the electric motor torque is greater than the diesel so it can def fight the current at full throttle. Also, a good sailor should stay out of those situations and know their limits, but I appreciate the comment!

I'm not sure I am a good or bad sailor, but I did have a go with the I5 bridge several years ago. Neither bridge nor boat kissed but it was a call closer than I desired. When you go out on the water stuff can just happen.

So the generator you bought. It will be gas or diesel? In the boat to power up the batteries?

Gas generator, 47 pound portable. It will be a charger source when I am not able to dock and plug in or if I need emergency power. Also will keep it at home for power outages and will use it on a small piece of property I am building a tiny house on and to power a 1977 Dodge Craftsman Bubble top camper van I restored. It will be on the deck in the starboard side T of the cockpit close to the shore power outlet.

I started a thread about a tiny Israeli engine that directly produces electricity. Now that is a system that makes since to me.

New Engine Design. What could it do for a boat?

I saw this on the attached video. Instantly, my mind wondered. How it might be used in a sailboat.

The example is in a car. But the application is what matters. Size and weight could favor a small boat. Since the engine works on different fuel the possibility to create a hybrid is intriguing to me.

The generator will be on deck and the fuel will be on deck on the opposite side of the cockpit. The deck is in a 'T' arrangement so the starboard side part of the top of the 'T' will have the generator and the port side will have a gas can. It will all be open air for now and if I build a gen box it will be properly vented. There will be a CO2 and Fire sensor on the boat as well.

You want a CO ( carbon monoxide) alarm. We had an interesting trip in 2019 (our story was shared here on SBO). One night we had a Honda 2000 generator on the stern of a Catalina 36. The wind shifted and though the exhaust was pointed away the wind blew it into the cockpit and CO seeped under the cabin. The CO alarm went off showing 400 parts per million. We got up at 0230. Opened up the cabin and encouraged the ventilation. The issue is scary.
Be careful.
