Among the projects now in process on "Spotted Dog" is the replacement of two ten inch bow cleats which were not properly backed, and which sat just forward of the rail ends, about 5 or 6 inches aft of the stem. I decided to change the entire bow arrangment. So far I've decided to install two bow chocks where the cleats were, with a nice anchor roller for a 22 lb. claw type anchor just to one side of the forestay. My question is where to install the cleats. My marina dude suggests one large cleat in the center set back from the anchor and beside the deck pipe. But that don't seem to me to be enough for things like spring lines or extra anchors. I favor a cleat on either side set back behind the pulpit giving a straight shot for the line to run out the opposite chock. Has anyone ever seen a sampson post installed on an old H30? How cool would it be to have a little sampson post in the center with a shiney new cleat on either side next to the rail? Or would all that be too much? exciting stuff huh?

Just curious, what year is your boat?

Hugh: I am just curious. We have a few H'30 Cherubinis in our harbor and I remember that they all only had a single large cleat.

Can't have too many mooring cleats

Just cause they put just one cleat there doesn't mean it's correct or good, just cheap. On my Hunter 33 when I built and installed my anchor platform I installed two big stainless "blue water" Herreshoff cleats, 8 or 10 inch, set off to the side and tagging into the toe rails. Lots of strength. I have a 12 inch version just waiting to go in just a little bit aft and centered. Also have 4 similar cleats waiting to go midship. Also have cleats installed on the aft vertical wall of the cockpit adjacent to the louvered vents. great for additional mooring lines or the dinghy while in tow. Can't have too many cleats! I was thinking of a mooring bit up forward myself. Still like the idea. Can't remember why I didn't, except I recall being concerned about the strength and quality of what was available.
