Another good one, KG. We get that here during Fleet Week & Opening Day. Two days I don't go out, like driving on New Years Eve.
This is what you call....More money than brains... You should see what happens here in South Florida on any given weekend at any given marina...
Try going out on the water for the midnight opening of Lobster Mini Season in South Florida. The boat ramps, the ICW, and the inlets are crazy. Mini Season is bad, but it is not the worst.

Fort Lauderdale's Winterfest boat parade, is insane on the water. People who never take their boats out of the shed, load way to many people on board, anchor in the ICW, and proceed to drink for 4 hours before motoring back to their storage marina, slip or the ramp in the dark. The small anchorages off of the parade route are complete bumper boats. We have watched this event from shore since I was a kid, but last year we took our kids out in the Stargazer to see what it was like. We went early to get a good anchoring spot, and then had two later boats drop anchor, and back down right over our rode. Then a 25-27' center console loaded with drunk teenagers dropped 10' in front of us, and started partying like crazy. Playing loud extremely vulgar booty rap music, drowning out the Christmas music from the parade boats. They had girls dancing on their hardtop, and peeing off the transom. We heard several of the boats surrounding us call marine patrol to get them removed, but every time the sheriffs' boat came by, they lowered the music, and calmed down until he moved on. We may go again this year, but I will try to find a private dock to tie off to instead of the public anchorages.

the sort of "shadow skipper" that checks in on you
In your car it is called "OnStar", so why not on boats. Big brother is watching. They are so good that at the sight of a recent accident (minor fender bender but air bag deployed) the driver said that OnStar was talking to the car less then 60 seconds after the event.
This is a scary development.

I got a buddy that can go in to m60 fire fight with a daisy bb rifle and come out unscaved totally amazing
Hey, those Daisy's were great BB guns!

Horseplay on the docks makes me crazy. We were coming in to our dock on the end after the last slip, and there are these two guys wrestling on the dock, aparentky trying to throw each other in the water. So, just as we are pulling in, with a breeze blowing us away from the dock, one of them success in throwing the other one in - right in front of our 40 ton boat. I'm thinking, "well, that takes my bow thruster off the list of options - the authorities would probably frown on grinding this guy's arm into hamburger...". Some of these guys really are testing Darwin's theory...

Lots of stories from members about the mayhem during peak season weekends, holidays or special events....
I had a jet boat on SD bay years ago, took her out on the 4th of July but got out super early and got a good anchorage basically on the beach, used the boat only a little during the day, and after fireworks was lucky to avoid boat ramp antics because I had use of a private military ramp at the time.
That said, you probably won't see my boat out during the Parade of Lights on SD bay. As some of you may recall a little boy was killed during the event some years ago when his family's boat was struck in the dark and he sustained a serious head injury. The boat that hit them... a Coast Guard patrol RHIB.

As a teenager my friend would borrow his families runabout and we would head to a local lake for water skiing and beer. One day at the end of a perfect day we ran the boat out of gas so had to paddle it all the way to the boat ramp. Ok it gets better...He backs the car and trailer down the ramp.. and the car runs out of gas. We pick up a couple of cans ( we ran X country) and run a couple of miles to the nearest gas station leaving a half dozen slightly buzzed teenage friends to watch the boat that was attached by the winch rope to the trailer....Wait for it.... We get back to find out that someone had taken the drain plug out of the transom...and the latch wasn't set on the winch....the boat had floated off the trailer and sunk up to the gunwales..all the gas cans and cushions ..paddles...and water skis were floating as far as 100 ft from the boat and everyone had fallen asleep in the grass next to the boat ramp. NOW THAT"S FUNNY....Thank goodness it was late enough that the only witnesses were the locals and a few birds...and of course fish.

I'm just glad to get my boat back where I want it. I know how sailing works and all but it's still magic to me.

Y'all know this is a thread that has risen from the dead, right? Skipper's post was from a year ago.

BUT, I'm sure all concerned mariners will be astonished to hear that Dana Point Marina has done absolutely nothing to upgrade the electrical service. Not one single thing. Which is nice. It's kinda poodle-skirt retro having 1966 technology. No GCFIs. No 50A or 30A service. Just a worn out old 15A outlet with a coupla adapters dangling out of it. I often plug my neighbor back in.

OTOH, they're spending lots of $$$ for questionable repairs to the floating docks because they're actually crumbling away. Just filling with slurry and calling it done. They really need to be replaced.

All this fun can be had for the low low price of $17.33 per foot. Ain't California grand!

A good blast on the air horn usually solves that kind of shenanigans.
