Has anyone seen, been aboard, sailed or even bought the new Catalina/Morgan 44 Deck Salon???? If so any and all comments would be appreciated. Thanks much, Capt. Ron

Looked like a nice boat...
We went on one at the Seattle boat show in January. In all fairness, we had just put our money down on a Catalina 42, so we really weren't interested in buying one - just confirming that we had made the right choice. The CM44 was nice inside, but it didn't seem to utilize the space as well as the C42. In particular, we like the seating around the table in the C42 where you can put people on the bench seat and play cards across the table instead of sitting in a "booth". The opposing seat on the CM44 is too far away to do that. Part of what we wanted in a boat was the ability to take 6 or more people. The way the CN44 we looked at was set up it could only handle 2 couples comfortably. If that is what you would normal take, then it may work for you. The boat we looked at also had the "walk-in" lazarette. Nice, to be sure, but it seemed to be a tremendous waste of space. In the other configuration you lose the lazarette, but get a bigger 2-person cabin. I would go with the lazarette myself. Don't know if that helps. The best advice is to look at the boat compaired to your standard "mission" and see if it will work for you. Warren

I was aboard this model at the Oakland Boat Show. It really felt like a Winnabago... it even had "Barcoloungers" in the TV room (I mean the salon). From the top of the cabin house to the water was about 14 feet. It was big and square and cloodgy. A real floating condo. Docking this sucker on a windy day would be downright dangerous. What were they thinking?

What was the depth of the keel? Granted, 14 feet is a lot to catch the wind, but maybe it had a deep keel to offset it a little.

Actually my description of the boat was somewhat of an exageration! It isn't 14 feet. And I am sure that the design is just fine as the folks at Catalina seem to do a pretty good job. As you probably guessed, it wouldn't be my first choice but that really doesn't mean all that much. It would probably be a great boat for a lot of folks. Accept my apology for being a snobbish rube. Liam, i agree that the boat looks - well - not real yachty. Some of us just prefer the sexy look of a more traditional boat.

To me the Morgan/Catalina 44 DS is better suited
For liveaboards and full time cruisers. Yeah it's set up very different from our boats that are more ideally suited to a few couples and or kids and typically weekend sailing and maybe one or 2 week cruises in the summer. But the Morgan 44 is really for those people that are going to live aboard and cruise full time. It might be unconvential to us, but when you live day in and day out on a boat with your spouse then the way the Morgan 44 is set up would make alot of sense.
