When I bought my Hunter it overwintered at Liberty Landing, where there is the Colgate sailing school. So there was a fleet of them. They would go out when it was blowing stink and all I saw was a bunch of kids (Young twenties) having fun.
If I gave up cruising and just wanted a Wed PM boat, or just to daysail, or even race club PHRF it would be on a short list of boats to look at.

There is a Colgate 26 that races in our Weds. night series and does very well even after PHRF (could be the skipper, the boat or both).
Since they are much newer boats you would be lucky to find a used one for under $30K. The base price for a new one is $43K.

All I know is that they are MUCH faster and MUCH higher pointing than any of the MacGregor boats. And they are easily singlehanded. They left me in the dust and rounding-up when they have passed me in 15 knots of breeze.
All that has been said about the C26 is true. If it was easily trailerable, I would have purchased one. I sailed the C-26 for 4 years as a rental and loved its maneuverability and pointing ability.
There is one in our local PERF fleet that does very well. This is more of a racer/day sailer as the cubby cabin is not very big.
