Hey all! Just bought my first sailboat (only 400 dollars, thought it was a steal) Anyways, im trying to get it registered and not quite sure about a few things. the number on the transom is ren22012m75h-s2240. I believe its a 21 foot oday. If anyone can help me identify it that would be great, throwing in some pictures below.

NOT an O'DAY. This is a 22' Reinell (sp?)
REN22012M75H breaks down as follows;
REN = REINELL INDUSTRIES
22 = model (22')
012 = Hull or Class# (this was 12th of this model built)
M75 = 1975 Model Year
H = March (1975), boat was built in March of 1975

With a recent gas crisis (in 1973) REINELL (a POWERBOAT builder) must have decided to try to stay in business by expanding into the sailboat realm. If I recal correctly, they built the 22 and a 26, neither really caught on and I don't think production lasted more than a few years. REINELL went back to building just powerboats and I'm not sure if/when they ceased production.

There never was an O'DAY 21, O'Day built a 20 (1973-78) and a 22 (1973-83), plus the 222 (1984-89). O'DAY did build, for a short time, the 21' YLING, which was a "mini" SOLING and was strictly a racing class boat, being built for the YLING Association.

What is that L-shaped fitting just above the backstay turnbuckle in the bottom pic?

Kinda of reminds me of the Chrysler design a while back.
Looks like they really pack'em in there at that marina.
I'm guessing your hull speed would be around 5 or so knots (you can figure that out with some research) look for a 5-7.5 hp and you'll be fine.
A 20hp would be way too much.
Looks like the tiller snapped off at one point.
Just like many of us did, take your time, don't be afraid to ask lots of questions. With some research and a bit of work you'll enjoy fixin her up.
It will take some cash, but do it at your own pace.
Good luck on your new project!

I have a 5hp, but im moored just up the fraser river in bc, canada. Well the little 5 wont get me back up the river (haha bad first outing). Found a really cheap working 20 that i was considering getting, what would be the drawback?

And haha, about the marina, its full of repo's (recession woes :()
This little boat was a repo, kinda sad

Figure out what the current is, then figure how fast the 5 was taking you in open water.
If you jump to a larger motor, you may need a larger motor bracket to prevent the current one from ripping off. Are there any others in the same position?

does this boat have a planning hull or a displacement hull? if a displacement hull then i believe the boat is pretty much limited to the calculated hull speed.

i would think anything over a 10 horse would be over kill. (you will most likely need a long shaft outboard) a four stroke has more lower end torque so you may have to beef up the bracket. best to have it checked out regardless.

Not a bad looking boat for $400, at least you know it floats.

Looks like they ran the front in hard a few times.

The backstay thingy is odd...

Is the boom attahced to the mast? Looks like its hanging free.

Nothing time and money won't fix. :)

Good lord what is that thing? How is she like below. Where is the steering on her? Is there a centerboard?

Right, the key here is 'time and money'. I hope you have an idea what you're getting yourself into. Getting an old boat and fixing it up can be like having your first child. You think you know what it's going to be like but you find out you didn't know what you were starting. But after it's over it was worth it. No matter how it comes out

Hah i do alright for spare time and money, i know boats are lots of money and have wanted one all my life, but i made sure to wait untill i knew i had the resources to attend to her :p

Anyways, the outboard bracket should tell me how big of a motor i can put on it right?

Im sure i'll have no problem trading down from this 20hp to something like a 9.9.

thanks for all your replies ;)

It's listed as 2631 kg, wonder if that sould be lbs - that seems more reasonable - considering the shoal keel and that its trailerable. Less sail area than my 22 but weighs over 1.5 tons more? Maybe you need a 20 on it.

Well, it's a unique boat - that's worth something in my book.

I think that is supposed to be 2631 POUNDS, this boat was marketed as a trailerable boat, and knowing the "family tree" of this design..... I'd expect her to be on the "light side", not as heavy as 5788.2#

In answer to the Planing/Dicplacement hull question, like most sailboats, this was a displacement hull, theoretical max speed would be approximately 1.34 x LWL (LWL = waterline length) for speed in knots. Sailboats are a bit "weird" though...... max speed (that is Hull Speed) is not an absolute limit...... and many boats "fool" the water into letting them exceed hull speed at times (but not by a huge amount, and then really only while sailing).

That 1.34 * sqrt(LWL)

And when a boat is heeled, the waterline typically lengthens a little getting you "extra" speed.

On my 222 I have an old 10hp Honda on it. I'm able to do 6.5 mph (according to gps) fairly easily. This was with me going against a slow outgoing tide. I cranked it up to see what I could do and 6.9 was about the most before it started squatting down pretty bad and just making noise. I would be pretty comfortable with 6-8hp on my boat if I were buying today. I sure wouldn't want to wrestle an outboard any heavier than what I've got on there. For a 10hp 4 stroke, my honda is pretty lightweight. I'd say it's pretty comparable to a 10hp 2 stroke.

Congratulations on your first boat. For $400, I don't see how you go wrong if you are somewhat handy and don't mind getting your hands dirty. If it floats, doesn't leak and has most of the necessary equipment, I don't see how you go wrong.

When choosing an outboard, you'll need to consider the weight of the boat, characteristics of the motor mount (is it rated for 4-stroke, what is the vertical rise), 2 vs. 4 stroke motor, new vs. used, length of shaft on the motor, typical size of waves, and tidal flow when making your choice.

I had an O'Day 222 and used a 6 hp long-shaft 4-stroke Tohatsu (2005). It pushed the boat at hull speed on smooth water, and near hull speed even with some small waves on Lake Michigan. Even in big waves it moved the boat well. I replaced the motor mount when I got the motor. I had a little cavitation issue when the waves got big (ie., the prop comes out of the water as the boat crests a big wave), but by and large it worked fine. Just be careful with the ethanol mixed gas. It can mess up motors if you let it sit too long. I tried to use pure gas when at all possible.

Good luck and welcome to the club.

That will teach me to answer posts late at night! The Square Root slipped my mind! 5.36 knots makes more sense for my DS II than 21.44 knots! Sorry if I shocked anyone with the theoretical "hull Speed" potential of their boat!
