Hi, Im am new into sailing. I bought a 1984 Catalina 25 this weekend for $1500. There is no damage to the hull or anywhere else. The only thing wrong with this sailboat is that the main is torn and will need to be replaced and it needs a good cleaning. I want to replace all the hoses and elecrical wiring in the inside of the boat before I actually replace the mainsail and start sailing with it. Now my question is, where is the waste holding tank on this model bc I cant find it anywher. i found the freshwater tank ( which will need to be replaced bc its filthy) but I cant find the waste tank. Also I`m trying to find a place I can get an owners manual for this boat if anyone has any suggestions please let me know. Overall it is a great boat, all the wood is in good condition and so are all the upholsteries. I plan on learning how to sail efficientlly on the lake before I`m even going to attempt to go any place else. That will give me time to clean the boat up pretty well and get everything ready for the summer time. If anyone has any suggestions or comments feel free to E-mail me at: jasonbarnett86@yahoo.com

Holding Tank?

Do you have a waste clean out on deck? If so, look for that hose and follow it to the tank. Just a thought. Contact Catalina for manual.

sailin dude

buy a porta potti

There is no holding tank unless one was installed aftermarket most likely in the bow. Get a 2&1/2 gallon Thetford Porta Potti from any camp store or West Marine for $75 and strap er down. PS I wouldn't go to far from home with no main sail either unless your an experianced enough sailer to get her home on her hat (Jib), in the event of motor failure. The Sail Wherehouse has killer deals on some used sails that will work excellent. Just match your dimensions with theirs. Go Online they have a site.

Salin dude is correct. I owned [new] 84 C-25 and it did not come with a head system. Strap down portable toilet is also the answer. That is what the new 84's came with, if my memory is corrrect.

HMMMMMMM

Well, I appreciate everyones help. Now I've looked and follewed the hose from the waste dump and found that it used to be conncected to something, but as of right now all the waste from the head is released through a valve in the hull into the outside water, and I'm pretty sure thats not the right thing to do. So I'm just going to put in a holding tank and replace all the hoses. Thanks again for everyones help.

CORECTION

So I found out 2day that the boat I bought is not a 1984 but a 1981. So maybe that changes things about the tank and anything else I had a question about. Any new suggestions?

Cost versus Convenience

Jason, I owned two 25 Catalina's and the installed head with tank and pump out fitting were options for that vessel. Consider this; if you decide to install a permanent head, holding tank, fittings, and all the trimmings your money would go farther by buying and installing a potta-potti with plenty of money left over for new lines, battery, tiller and other nice things for the boat. What you paid for the boat was a steal, if no fiberglass damage is noted and standing rigging is sound and hull to deck strong. A permanent holding tank on a fresh water Georgia lake will require you find a pump out station now and then versus a washroom for dumping the potta-potti tank. A permanent head system will generate odors on the boat and a holding tank would take up precious storage room for other needs. Add the "U" loop, sanitary hose, thru deck fitting, stainless clamps, vent to the cost of the head and tank and your looking at a bunch of time and money. Their is nothing wrong with a potta-potti on your vessel. Some of the old timers and tradionalists still use a cedar bucket! But the GADNR would toss you in the brig if you were ever caught dumping overboard! For my money I would opt for a nice potta-potti. Check places like K-Mart or Walmart as they have many that are well suited for a sailboat and you will save $$$. Enjoy the 25, she's a great sailor. Bob Catalina 30
