Hello, I just purchased a new (old) 1968 Chris Craft and am trying to identify where the foul odor is coming from. I am going to do the hose test
with a hot rag this weekend to see if is the hoses. I am also going to check the shower sump. I suspect it is either the hoses or the raw water intake.
How does one check for a blocked vent hose and unclok it? I am attaching a pic of our setup. Can someone help me identify the system I have installed, I did not see any markings? I assume its raw water from the look of the water filling the bowl and the smell. Can someone also direct me to a link for the Toilet and Holding Tank 101 Guide that Peggy wrote? I tried the link in her signature, but it takes me to a blank page. Any help is appreciated.

Thankn you,
Todd

She wrote a BOOK

Can someone also direct me to a link for the Toilet and Holding Tank 101 Guide that Peggy wrote?

The only shortcut she's posted here is recommissioning water tanks and pipes. Do a search on the word recommission.

The rest is in the book. Go to the Expert Forums to order it. No free lunch.

Under the terms of the contract with her publisher, Peggie had to pull that article from the internet - so it isn't available any longer. You'll now have to buy the book.

Got it! I didn't realize that was the same thing as her book. I will order it right away.

Can anyone comment on the best way to determine if the vent is blocked and how to unblock it? Do I have to take apart the vent hose and just blow through it with a shop vac?

It seems when I flush, the water is somewhat light brown. I expected it to be more clear even though its sea water. Our holding tank is now pretty empty. Why would the water not be clear in the bowl? It is also a bit sudsy when it comes in. Is this normal?

Thanks,
Todd

Ahem, Stu...Vic... And about your toilet, Todd...

He was referring to my book, which I often refer to as a "comprehensive marine toilets and holding tanks 101 guide." And the signature at the end of every one of my posts includes a hot link to it in the sbo.com online chandlery. When sbo rearranges the furniture on the site and my book gets moved, the link quits working...and yep, it was down but it's working again now.

Now, about your toilet...I just looked at your photos, and if that's not the worst plumbing nightmare I've ever seen, it's definitely a contender! And I'm not gonna be able to sort out what you do have without some one on one conversation--REAL conversation via voice, 'cuz I have all kinds of questions about what I CAN see and even more about what I can't. So send me an email (just click on my name above my photo to the left of this post to do that) and I'll reply with contact information.
