I'm contemplating the purchase of a new Hunter 420. What discount should I be able to negotiate off list if I order one (as opposed to buying one "off the lot")? Thanks, Bob H34 Cheers

You'll probably not get a discount on the boat itself unless you make the deal at a boat show and get the boat show price. However, the deal comes on the extras that can be provided at discount or less. So make sure you have your list of extras well in hand when you start to negotiate. (Experience from buying two new boats (Hunter 30, and Hunter 340 from two different dealers).

Buy "off the lot" if......

the boat is equiped with most of the stuff you want. The longer the boat has been there, the better deal you can make.

Here's what I've found out.............

according to "how to buy the best sailboat" a book on sailboat buying , a dealer's margin on a new boat can run from 15 to 20 % on the base price and up to 50% on the options. I guess a lot depends on the time of year and how many new boats are sitting at the dealer's dock and how long they've been sitting there. Also, a lot depends on the market in your area. Seattle is crawling with 25-35 yo techies with lots of money who are buying boats. I'm going to be ordering a new 320 so I'm having the same thoughts as you. Good luck with your purchase.
