WELL GUYS THIS FORUM HAS ALWAYS BEEN HELPFULL BEFORE AND I DON'T EXPECT ANY LESS NOW. THE WIFE AND I ARE HEADED UP TO NEW BERN ON THE 2ND OF SEPT TO SPEND A WEEK AT A TIME SHARE WE SWAPPED FOR AT FAIRFIELD HARBOR (I THINK). I HAVE CONSIDERED LOOKING FOR RETIREMENT PROPERTY,HOUSE, CONDO OR WHATEVER, BUT JUST LOOKING AT THIS POINT. WHAT I REALLY WANT NOW IS TO SEE IF I CAN HOOK UP FOR A SAIL OR TWO IN THE AREA TO SEE WHAT IT'S LIKE. WE HAVENT SAILED UP THAT WAY IN 25 YEARS SINCE WE WENT SOUTH FOR THE WINTER IN '82 (NEVER WENT BACK). ALSO LOOKING FOR GOOD LEADS ON GOOD PLACES TO EAT AND DRINK WITH THE BEST HAPPY HOURS ETC. WOULD CONSIDER RENTING A BOAT FOR THE DAY IF THAT IS POSSIBLE... I HAVE RECIEVED A TON OF STUFF FROM THE REALESTATE PEOPLE AND TOURIST INFO BUT I WANT THE LOCAL KNOWLEDGE KIND OF STUFF, YOU KNOW THE KIND OF PLACES THE LOCALS GO AND HANG OUT. WE WILL BE CHECKING OUT THE AREA WITHIN 25-50 AROUND BUT NOT ON THE OCEAN SIDE, WANT TO STAY ON THE MAINLAND. DID THE OUTTER BANKS A FEW YEARS BACK AND I DON'T WANT TO BE THAT TOURISTY AGAIN. ANYWAY ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREAT AND RATHER THEN TYING UP THIS SITE EMAIL ME DIRECT AT 1KELADI@MSN.COM AND MAYBE WE CAN SHARE A FEW BEERS AND STORIES TOGETHER THANKS CHET P HARRIET'S CHARIOT HUNTER 37CUTTER #36

Oriental!

Oriental is about 20 minutes or so from New Bern. It is referred to here as the sailing capital of the South. I am told there are more sailboats than people because of all the people that "wintered" there and never moved their boat out. Several sailing schools in the area and most will charter you with a Captain, but I don't know about w/o captain. There is also a good deal of ongoing development there. I know of at least two areas that are building neighborhoods with docks and/or deepwater access. Try this link and expand from there.

New Bern Vacation

Dave is right Oriental to New Bern and the Pamlico offer great sailing, and many new developements between Oriental and New Bern. As for charterning a sailboat for the day or week you can try Captain Chris Daniels at the Oriental School of Sailing (252-249-0960 or 252-675-1321) he has a couple of 26-27 foot boats for daily and I think a 34+ CC for weekly. You can also go to Whittaker Creek Marinia for larger boat for charter. Enjoy your vacation.
