Hello, I think my 23.5 might need a new battery. I don't know the first thing about them. The only duty for the battery is lights -- I don't have any electronics wired in. Can anybody make a recommendation for my next battery? Brand, type -- any info would be appreciated.

I Agree With Landsend

I think Type27 means a regular "Wet" "Lead/Acid" battery, like the type most of us use in out cars. I think the only important difference is the term "Deep Cycle" Battery. Most regular auto batteries are designed to give a lot of power (CCA=cold cranking amps) for a short period on time. They do not like to be fully discharged and must be kept in a fully charge state. Although all batteries should be kept in a fully charged state, Deep Cycle batteries are designed to be run down/discharged and recharged. Regards, Captain Bob Fliegel, S/V JoySea

A type 24 is smaller and cheaper.

For the usage you are considering a type 24 will be more than adequate and is smaller, lighter and cheaper than the type 27. Do get a deep cycle and try to keep it charged to extend its life.

size 24 and 27

24 and 27 and 29 are all size measurments...both in physical size of the batteries and in the storage capacity. Type 27 are just a bit larger than type 24 a few bucks more and about right for yout needs. Type 29 are thus a bit larger than type 27. See what fits your space requirements and remember to buy a battery box and install it securely.

You might try or look into

an AGM or Gel battery. They have some advanatages over a "normal" wet cell. I use the Gel because they don't require adding water nor have the problem with excaping Hydrogen gas and are compleatly sealed, will seal themselves if craked and will work even upside down or in any position inbetween. The only problem with the Gel battery is that they require a charger made for them, voltage critical. The reason I use the gel is you can install it and forget it and it holds a charge when not in use. I carry 3 type 27 gels and one type 31 on board my H 260 and charge it with a 40AMP True Charger John USNret

Class 27 Gel

We have a Gel class 27 on our 23.5, that runs lights and VHF, got it at WalMart, a few years back. Holds a charge great between charges, and under constant use for a week long cruise, it gets by on one or two recharges. The biggest problem is its weight. If the water tank is empty, the weight of the battery and motor, both on the starboard side, make the boat list a bit while at dock. Rob SV Kinship
