Guys and Gals: I am sooo pleased with my upgraded batteries. As you may recall, a few days back, I was asking about different battery configurations for my Catalina 27. With coaching from the West Marine folks in Annapolis and Alexandria, I was able to change out 2 group 24's deep cycles for 1 starter and 2 six volt deep cycles. I went from 120 amp hours for the house to 450 amp hours with the addition of just one battery. Life is good. Thanks to all, Melody

Congratulations, those 6 volts should last forever.

Glad you are happy

This should be a great improvement, but your math is off. When you put 6 volt batteries in series, you double the volts, but don't change the amps. You probably have around 225 amps in the house bank. If you put 12 volt batteries in parellell, you keep the same volts, but double the amps.

Alternator and Charger

Melody, did your alternator or charger need to be upgraded to supply the larger amps? Did all of this fit in the same space as the old batteries or did you have to create more room elsewhere? Glad this worked for you. John

Yep, I Made an Error

Hi All, Gene's right on the math. I've gone to about 450 (2x225) in total amps rather than 450 for the house bank alone. I was able to do this with the room I had as I only added one new battery. However the new battery is sitting about 3 ft away from the other two. There seems to be no problem with the alternator as I can see. Thanks Melody
