New America's Cup Venue... Where and what it means

So, From this America's Cup we learned that while the almighty dollar may not buy the best boat, it will certainly buy the best team. That is not a swipe at Russel Coutts (who is on his way to being the best skipper of our generation).But what is next? The venue moves to the home of the Swiss, and, I assume, a LAKE! What do you think the competition will look like next time around? What how much of an edge - or lack thereof - will the home waters present to Allinghi? The biggest thing I can see affecting the race would be a lack of heavy seas, current, and possibly tide. Anyone familiar with with the geography of the region? From what I could find, most lakes appear to be surrounded by mountains, long, somewhat narrow. Very similar to the geography of the lakes near me, and these lakes are known for erratic, gusty winds and constant rocky leeward shores.Looks like the next challenge will be interesting, to say the least....

America's Cup Venue- European

I doubt if the Swiss will sail on Lake Geneva. I've heard that Monaco has already offered to help the Swiss in hosting the next Cup.. RE

Not allowed on a lake ?

I thought the venue had to be on a body of water that touches the ocean somehow. Although everything else seems open to interpretation by whomever has the most $Jeff

This has been discussed quite a bit already

From all I have heard the top contenders for locations are Portugal, the Spanish or French Riviera or maybe near Naples, with the front runner being Portugal and on the Atlantic.Just an FYI From the 'original' Deed of Gift it says " All such races shall be on ocean courses, free from headlands," (See link below)Don't know if there are any loopholes - but why would they change precedent FYI-Also-- read on  "Any organized Yacht Club of a foreign country, incorporated, patented, or licensed by the legislature, admiralty, or other executive department, having for its annual regatta on ocean water course on the sea, or on an arm of the sea, or one which combines both, shall always be entitled to the right of sailing a match for this Cup"

Let the biding begin

I believe several countries have already started jockeying for the right to host on behalf of the Swiss. Apparently it brings a lot of $$$$$$$$$ to the port and the country. I believe Portugal, Spain and Monaco have expressed interest. I wonder if Newport RI will make an offer?Hayden

Next America's Cup

The Golden Gate Yacht Club (Oracle) has already been accepted as the "challenger of record" for the next Cup event. They are negotiating with Société Nautique de Genève (Alinghi) for the next event.
