I've been looking on the internet for a new outboard. I been looking at the Tohatsu 6 HP extra long shaft with a small pitch propeller combination. Does any one out there have any experience with this particular engine? What size boat have you used it on and whats the farthest you have ever motored with it? I'm trying to see what the durability and reliablity is on this type of motor is? and the speed at which you moved?

Ive had one for nearly 3 years. I run the hell out of it, starts easily but (as all OBs) needs a really clean plug (change often).
My 6 HP will bring a 9.5' soft vee bottom inflatable to a plane with 280 lb. load onboard - this is with the std pitch prop, so maybe youll get up to a heavier load plane with it pitched lower.
The 4 5 & 6 HP Tohatsus are all the same power head ... just larger carburator jets per model.

I have used the tohasu 6 hp with the 25 in shaft and optional smaller pitch prop. Have about 50 hrs on the engine. No problems. If stolen I would buy the same engine again.
It is just barely adequate on my ODay 272 used on a lake (no currents). At about 2/3 throttle it will push boat to 5mph in no wind. Maybe 6mph at full throttle. (This engine is more appropriate for a 22 ft boat but I also have an inboard diesel. Outboard is quieter, no odor and no unwanted heat in the cabin during the summer.)

I have A Tohatsu 9.9hp. I have used it for three years without any problems. From what I have read the Tohatsu and small Mercury's are the same engines.
Tohatsu is from Nissan. Call it their non-name brand. yes they make the small Mercs. Only difference is the couling. Merc's are abit more , Then Nissans, then Tohatso-basically because of availability of parts. There are more merc dlrs than Nissan, Thqan Tohatsu...Very reliable...Bob
Actually Tohatsu makes the 20hp and under outboards for Nissan and Merc. Only difference is the paint and decals. You just pay more for a familiar name.

I purchased a 6 hp Tohatsu for my 20' Jeanneau last year. Only one complaint. The "bolt" to secure the motor position become loose after using the motor. I use a tiller tamer most of the time, but wish there was a better way of locking the motor in the "strait" position.

I use mine on my 10 ft dinghy great little engine I have only had it two years but it starts very easy and runs like a champ.
