I just returned from two-weeks work in Charleston, SC, where I heard about this yacht theft, I see no other info on the internet except the local paper. Quotets from The Post and Courier-Charlston: "Investigators said Friday there is still no trace of the 57-foot luxury sailboat stolen last week from a slip at Charleston's City Marina, though sightings of the vessel have been reported from the Bahamas to the interstate." The $750,000 yacht disappeared the night of Jan. 7 or early Jan. 8. "Investigators say they have few clues and no suspects." "The Coast Guard and Charleston Police Harbor Patrol searched for the yacht the day it was reported missing, but no trace was found. Investigators say they are almost certain the yacht, which has a 75-foot-tall mast and weighs more than 47,000 pounds, is on its way to the southern hemisphere." "Fishing and sailing charters have been asked to be on the lookout, advisories have been posted on sailing-related Web sites, ham-radio operators are spreading information about the boat's description, and reward posters are popping up all over the world." "The Beneteau 57 is a rare model and was the only one owned so far in North America. McIntosh's boat was the second hull of its class produced. Only 50 of the 57-foot class have been built. The blue-hulled boat with mahogany staterooms was featured prominently in several sailing publications when it arrived in Charleston in May."

OH MY GAWD!

thats a pretty big toy to steal! should one who has such a treasure consider a locating device? micro chips on the ear? the club on the wheel? the mind boggles. and where the heck could the robbers hide it? my guess is it will turn up!

Similar boat stolen by scam

Several years ago I was invited to sail on a Jenneau 51 by the dealer in Annapolis. A few weeks later that boat was stolen but through a sophisticated scam. From what I heard, a person posed as a qualified buyer, worked with the sales people for some time, etc. Just prior to closing the deal, he asked to take the boat for a weekend but didn't return. Ultimately the boat was recovered when the steering broke near the Bahamas (I think). Harry Greenspun Bethesda, MD Hunter 456 - "Czech Mate" harry@greenspun.com

Currrent and insured?

Sorry, but the hmmmm financial factor? would be my first question-was the boat insured and has the owner had any trouble keeping current on the loan (or had other financial stresses)? Sad to say, but first suspect in a murder is the spouse and ther first suspect in boat theft is the owner! And that could be why my insurance went up!

It's been spotted ...

in the islands. Cannot remember Bahamas, Carribean, but a definite location was indicated. It is hard to believe that with only a 12 to 15 hour head start that the thieves were able to get a unique boat this far at a top speed of, what, 9 maybe ?

To answer some of your questions. The boat was purchased about a week before it was stolen for about $600k (discounted from the paper's earlier price). The insurance company has a 10k reward offer. Sightings have not panned out. Not a bad idea to put an ONSTAR type of locator on a dingy of that size.

Chances are......

They'll nab him when he tries to claim a warranty repair.

So Sad

I have seen this boat before in the harbor. I have also seen it upclose in the city marina right after it arrived. It is too sad that this boat was stolen. It was an absolutly beatiful boat. It was one of my favorites out on the water. I hope the boat is found. Good luck.
