New 23' Oday owner

We have just purchased an '81, 23' Oday. We will be relatively new to sailingbut not to boats in general. The boat is on a trailer and we just moved it to our home on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Starting to clean up and familiarizeourselves with the boat and hope to moor the boat in Salem next Spring. She is clean and in fairly good shape. Will re-cover cushions as they are moldy so coulduse some suggestions here. I see two thru hulls on the port side, one I assume isfor a toilet, the other I don't know? I am sure we will have plenty of questions as we progress so look forward to using the forum a great deal. thanks for any help.Bill Mac

Not the toilet

Hi Bill. You bought a great boat. I have a '79, and IMHO it is the best small daysailer/minicruiser out there. There should be no toilet-related through hull on the boat. The only port-side through hull I have is for the sink in the head. Oday seems to have changed some minor details on the boats through the years, and the location of the through hulls may have been one. I have the one on the port side, forward of midships for the head sink, and one aft of midships on the starboard side that I believe drains the galley sink. I don't know for sure since I have never used the water "system" on my boat. The prior owner hadn't used it in the 12 years he owned the boat, and it needs total replacement, something I don't really have the time, energy or need to do.I doubt Oday ever made a toilet through hull as the boat was designed to use a porta-potti. I guess it is possible that one of the prior owners of your boat did retro-fit a marine head into the boat, but if they did, it is supposed to have a holding tank. Direct discharge of head waste is illegal within a certain number of miles off shore; I forget the exact distance, but I remember it was far enough for me to think I would never take an Oday 23 out that far. In any case, it would be a good idea to find where the through hulls on your boat lead to and make sure they're protected. You made a great choice of boat. Good luck.

Bilge discharge maybe?

I don't have a 23, however I wonder if the other through hull is for the bilge pump dicharge? My Oday 22 has one on the port for the galley sink, the one on the starboard side for the bilge. Both are at the bootstripe.For what it's worth.Jack HartSEA-YA!

thru hulls

I agree with mike the thru hulls are most definetly for the head sink and or thegalley sink. I have both on my 26, I am not sure of the layout on the 23 but you should not have any thing for the head other than a sink thru hull. I hear quite abit about your boat and all sounds good , SO HAPPY SAILS !

Through hulls

Yes the port through hull is for the head sink. The starboard through hull towards the rear of the boat is for the galley sink. I have a 1980 23 I believe it is the same as your 81. It is a great boat, we bought ours just over one year ago. You should reseal everything and I mean everything that passes through the deck, and check that your anchor locker is not leaking. We called ours the leaky teaky for a while. All from rain water, it took some work but I think we have solved most of the leaks. The folks here on the fourm have been invaluable to me. Enyoy. Cushions

I forgot to mention the cushions. Ours too smelled like I don't know what. My wife and I took the old cusions to a fabric store and the gentelmen there cut us new foam the shape and size of our old cusions. It was not that expensive, in fact the fabric we purchased to cover the new foam cost more than the new foam. Do yourself a favor and ditch the old foam if it is moldey. Scott "On Eagles Wings"
