I am doing something I said I never would, networking instruments. We bought a Garmin wind indicator/depth finder bundle. They require an NMEA 2000 net work to communicate. The package contained two of these one light grey. No beer, that was purchased locally . Instructions say the light grey one is a surge protector/lightning arrestor. Package was short one T connector. Is this a picking error,or another lightning arrestor?

Hooked up the "network" with a store bought T from WM, called the admiral to come see and lo and behold, the screen stayed dark. Called Garmin on their local not 800 number, got a person on the second ring after wading throu a several step vioce response system. The answer is.......
GMI 10 display draws power from 0183 network. Question for those with more networking than I have what is in the lump on my GPS 0183 cord. Is it some kind of Balun, or can I safely cut it off ?

Yee Haw not one, but two networks. Next thing you know GPS will steer my boat, GMI 10 will show true wind.

The lump is a ferrite bead which is on there so the product meets emissions requirements set by the FCC and other agencies. Depending upon the nature of the emissions that forced the manufacturer to add it to begin with, removing the thing could cause interference with the radios on your boat. It also has a secondary effect of offering a bit of protecting against ESD discharges and the like but 99% of the time you see those things it's because someone was failing a certification test and needed a quick solution.

Has anyone told you that your dog is haunted?

Whoa! Don't start cutting up anything!

Take a look at this:

which should give you an idea of what else you need in order to make that NMEA 2000 network need. Really not much, and you might actually already have it as part of the bundle. Basically, there is a "starter kit" that you need which connects into your boat's power system and provides power to the network. Then, each of the sensors and displays can simply be plugged into the backbone via the T-connector that should come with each sensor or display unit you buy. Then at each end of the network backbone, there is a terminator piece.

I think the tech person you spoke to might have mis-understood your question - the network isn't getting power from any "0183" network - it has to come from a NMEA 2000 connection.

Dog loves me. Doesn't know any better. My cell Ph camera flash lit up his rods and cones.

I knew about that SA stuff when you were making fun of your admiral. That can be expensive. Verry expensive!!

OK, I won't cut the ferrite bead off. I'll put a drink holder or something there to hide the wires. Tacky, I know but $2k cheaper than a new square Edson Pedistal.

Looking at the link tim sent me, The right end with the T connector is the installation drawing Garmin sent with the parts for the other "in line termination" in the other drawing


Package came with starter kit. That piece is the same shape as what they called a lightning arrestor in light grey.

Garmin GMI 10 screen is in fact powered by its 0183 red and black pins. I rigged up jumpers and lit up the screen with W/S W/D data.

Package shows both ends with T connectors. buried deep in the link(p9) is the drawing that matches the parts in the package.
