We want to change the name of our boat- name and hailing port- that we purchased a few years ago. I realize for bigger boats (generally 25' and over) this is a big deal, if the vessel is over 5 net tonnage. I'm having a hard time finding the net tonnage of a Catalina 22.

Sailboats generally cross 5 net tons somewhere in the 27 foot range. It's the minimum net size for USCG documented vessels.

Change away, your C22 is way too small to have been documented. There would have been other signs as well, internal numbering, paperwork, and big block letters used for your names and port.

But even something like a Catalina 30, or 34, 36, etc - if I understand this right - if state-registered with decal(s) and letters+numbers up front and NOT federally/USCG documented, the name can be changed as desired (and Neptune permits.)

The name/hailing port is basically cosmetic and not officially the identifying mark IF the boat is state registered...again, IF I understand this right ('cause I've had this same question.)
