Know this isn't exactly sailing related (well, sort of) but I'm wondering if any of my fellow posters can help me out with a computer question. This summer, I completely re-wired my Mac 26D. (it REALLY needed it!) Before I started the project, I sat down with the old laptop on the boat and drew out the whole thing in 'AutoSketch v 2.1' . (yea, I know, antique, but it works for me and it'll run on my old LT) Anyhow, there have been a few people over on the MacG portion of the site that would like to take a look at these schematics. Problem is, I can't figure out how to translate the files into something that will post to the site with good resolution and in color. Anybody out there know how to do this sort of stuff? Basically, I have 3 drawings I want to post. The first is just the basic schematic, in color and with part #s and wire guages shown in about '8 point' size type. (when the drawing is printing on 8.5 x 11 sheets) The second is layout drawings, details on the shorepower install, battery hold-downs, bezel for the DC panel, etc. The third is straight text, specs, BSS and WM part #s, notes, ABYC stuff, etc. I've tried scanning the drawings and going with .jpeg , but lost all of the small detail and the files were too big to post here. I'm not sure if it's even possible, but due to my rather significant lack of computer skills, I'm betting this is kid stuff for someone 'in the know'. So, if you would be so kind as to help me figure a good way to post AutoSketch .skd files on this BB, I'd really appreciate it!! Thanks, Jeff

Do you have Adobe Acrobat?

Do you have Adobe Acrobat or know someone who does? If so print the documents to the acrobat file and make a pdf. This will be viewable by all. If you do not have Adobe perhaps I can help. Post your e-mail address and I will e-mail you privately and prhaps you can send me the file and I can transfer it for you - I have the full Acrobat suite on my PC. Hope this helps James SV "Bognor Limey"

Maybe...

To do what you want requires a program that can open the .skd file, and then print it to a PDF file. I can open AutoCAD files, and then convert them to PDF, but I cannot open the .skd file. Can you convert to AutoCAD from the .skd? Steve

I May be able to help

Jeff, I use Autosketch ver 2 and love it. I recently bought the latest ver 9 for just your reason, however it is a pain in the A*** and not to be recommended. You can upgrade from their website for a fee. However ver 9 will open .skd files and re-save them as .dwg which Autocad needs. Problem is there are two versions of Autocad which seem incompatible, 2000 and 2004. If you e-mail me the .skd drawings I will try to convert them and return them to you as .dwg or as international file transfers .dxf or .jpg or .tif or .wmf - it claims to do them all. Regards, My ID is donylex@compuserve.com. Remember to replace the donylex with donalex - its just to confuse the auto spammers - I hope!

WOW! Now my head is hurting!! *yks

Thanks for all the great ideas! I've been at this for hours now and can't find a solution. I can translate the .skd file to .dxf and .dwg formats, but when I try to import the .dxf file into another app, the text size goes whacko! Also, from what I found while exploring what is required to post a pic here, there are some pretty serious limitations, file MUST BE .jpeg format and max file size is 80k!! So, no .pdf's or .dwg and download the viewer sort of thing will work. Geez this is frustrating! I really want to be able to upload a well-detailed, printable drawing that people can actually use! Is it perhaps possible to have Phil or someone figure out if this is doable at the server? (assuming he'd even allow it in the first place?) If I remember right, I've got something like 5 meg of server space with my ISP, is it possible for me to simply have a link to that and then let people download the files and the freeware viewer? (I'm starting to think I need a website!) Donalex, I'll try to send you the files and see what you can do. I know what you mean about the later versions of ASketch. A friend of mine tried ver. 6 and hated it! Gave it a try myself once over at his house, and I had to agree that they had manage to turn a very useful and intuitive application into a piece of #$%@ ! *x Jeff

OK, here's what I figured out...

I think I may have finally gotten fairly close, I've been able to successfully translate the drawing over to a Windows Meta File (.wmf) and the conversion went smooth. No loss of color, text size or placement, etc. And wmf files open nicely in MS Word, so for now I'll just email whoever wants a copy and see about getting a small website going where I can post them as afull set. Thanks for all the help and advice!! Jeff
