We have a 2002 356. The following is a question I had asked a couple years ago. Anyway we still don't have a windlass and I have run out of Ibprofen! So, if someone with a 356 could forward info on the OEM windlass that fits our 2002 model that would be great. A brand and model # would be very helpful:confused. And if possible- a photo would be great. We are currently sailing Lake MI and the near straits waters. Thanks for any help.

Contact the HOW store. They can provide you with what you need. They have access to an open throat unit if that is what you boat needs.

We have an 03 H356 with the factory supplied windlass. It is a Simpson Lawrence by Lewmar. I don't think they make this model but they have the equivalent that will fit as well. I like it because it is flush with the deck, easy to use when the locker is open. You may have the wires already there from the factory.
good luck, Bob

You'll need a base plate that has cut-out in front for the rode tp drop forward-down to locker instead of the dropping directly down a hawsaw hole.
I understand this base plate is specially made for Hunter by SL Lewmar.

Simpson Lawrence (Sprint 1000) Windlass

Yeah, they don't make these anymore so it's hard (=impossible?) to get parts (e.g. manual retrieval fitting). The windlass (gears, housing, and gypsy) itself is great; the electric motor [British made] that drives it is a joke, however. I think the Sprint is designed so the motor would not actually be in the locker with the incoming rode/chain--i.e., protected from any contact with seawater by a partition, bulkhead, or special enclosure. In my anchor locker, which does not provide that protection, water seeps into the motor and corrodes the armature, brushes, and the internal bearings, particularly the one at the bottom of the motor assembly [when the windlass is vertically installed], that allow the armature to spin. The end cap is made of some kind of pot-metal that degrades over time making repairs but a hopeful exercise in not breaking it somewhere, especially at the screw caps that give access to the electric brushes. I'm on my third motor (= $500 each) since I bought the boat 10 yr ago. And, this third one I "rebuilt" in June of this year instead of buying another new one [still hard to get]. New internal bearings and new brushes. This is in spite of my attempt to seal the motor much better than as it arrives from the factory.

I think you are right. On ours the motor is inside the boat and has never seen any water. The boat is a 2003 and we have never had to service the unit. A friend with a Beneteau has gone through a windlass every couple of years. Maybe that is the difference, I've never at his to see where the motor actually sits. Must be exposed to sea water.

The real question remains for the OP what is the current model of windlass that will fit in this space ? Does anyone know ? They do sell a variety of windlasses here there is not one in the H356 parts section. I would check the size of chain you are using to be sure it will be supplied with the correct gypsy.
