i picked up a 22 cat. 8 months ago. the boat had been abandoned nearly three years earlier. i towed the boat six miles to a dock.($50.00) then i bought a three horse air cooled used game fisher, that it turns out did not run properly. i had this motor in and out of shop,(boat has set for 8 months more)to find that the motor when installed on the motor mount and lowered to lowest point will not even touch the water. i have never had the bottom cleaned( but did just hire someone to clean the bottom next week) and i have concerns on through hull fittings(most handles have rusted away in the open position(boat does not leak) Now my next thoughts are should i buy a trailer for this boat i have not had out yet to check the bottom etc. or should i just go ahead and concentrate on useing the boat as is? does anyone know what an old used trailer for a 22 cat swing keel would sell for all advice appreciated on any of these subjects thanks lee

C-22

Lee; I had a C-22 for several years. What through-hulls? The head is a porti-potty and the engine is an outboard. Speaking of outboards; IMHO, throw that 3hp two-stroke away; it's underpowered. You want five ponies at the minimum (some will argue with this), but I sail in the ocean, with tides, current, wind and waves. You should go thru the boat with a fine-tooth comb before you use it. If something fails, you could put others at risk saving you. Murphy, like rust, never sleeps.

trailer and thoughts

You can probably find a trailer big enough for under $500 if you look around long enough. Make sure it has surge or electric brakes that work unless you have some monster truck or heavy duty van to tow it on mostly flat ground cautiously. Make sure lights work and tires are good, have a spare and a jack that works and check the bearings and add bearing buddies that keep grease in and water out. Make sure the bunks and rollers fit or can be adjusted to fit your boat shape. I agree with other response about motor. Need at least a 4hp high torque or bigger with long shaft and I've even seen up to a 15hp on boats that size for a safety factor. Dependable engine is a must. Four strokes are nice: quieter, use less fuel, don't foul plugs. Just a bit heavier, cost more.
