My Raymarine ST60 wind instrument is dead, on our newly acquired 1991 Hunter Passage 42. The anemometer and wind vane at the masthead turn, but ohmmeter indicates no current passing along the wire down the mast, and the display at the helm had a busted cover, so probably salt air has destroyed this part of it anyway. I think it can't be repaired, so I am planning to replace it. All the other helm instruments are Raymarine and all are working, including autopilot, depth sounder and boat speed, and with Garmin GPS

I am curious to know what preferences on brand names for wind instrument replacements and what are the reliability and advantages of different types if any, and if anyone has used the TackTick wireless system and what is your experience with it, as it would simplify installation as no wiring need be fished down the mast.

Mike there are three elements in the Wind S/D System. They are the Wind S/D Anemometer at the mats head, the cable runing between that and the display, and lastly the display unit. The problem could be in any of the three. If the mast is down (or if someone can remove the anemometer), it can be tested at a local marine Electronics shop. The display unit could also be removed and tested. If either doesnt check OK, it can be repaired. If both of those test OK you could borrow a cable assembly from an ME shop and connect the anemometer to the display while holding the anemometer by hand in the cockpit. If it the works, it is your cable assembly that needs replacing. Sounds like a bunch of work, but so is replacing the whole system, and that would cost a lot more. If your marina has a crane, they could hoist someone in a harness/chair to remove the S/D anemometer for testing.

I have had my S/D Xmttr repaired, and seperately also replaced the cable assembly at a different time using the above techniques. Good luck.

I would suggest that you send the mast head component back to Raymarine for testing/repair. They normally do not charge for this service. It that is the problem, it is just one more trip up/down the stick and you will be good to go.

You may also want to send the display at the same time (kill two birds with one stone).
