I recently had problems starting my 1983 Evinrude Yacht-Twin 9.9 HP motor and, upon bringing it in for servicing, was informed that it needed about $600 worth of repairs. As I have done business with the shop owner where the estimate was provided and trust him, I immediatly began to think about buying a good used motor or a brand new one. The shop carries new Suzuki 9.9 4 cylinder motors (electronic and pull start combo) but the price tage is $2,200 plus tax. They also have a used 1992 Johnson 8 HP which they have overhauled and want $800 for it. Has anyone had experience with the Suzuki motor? Is there another brand which you have had a good experience with? What about the used Johnson, which the shop says is in execellent shape but will only warranty for 30 days? Would appreciate any comments and advice! ---Rafa

9.9 Evinrude

Rafa I have a 1990 9.9 Evinrude. It was hard starting and I researched a lot on the C25 message board (www.catalina25-250.org). They know a LOT about motors for your boat. Go there. They (the C25 guys) suggested that it was the power pack based on my explanation of hard starting when it was cold, but the shop I researched and found here in SF, east bay, Outboard Motor Shop recently moved from Alameda to the Oakland side of the estuary, fixed it with a new (rebuilt) carburetor and a new kill switch. Runs great. $440. I bought it at a swap meet for $800 [obviously NO warranty!!!]. Still less than a new one (2 or 4 stroke). I suggest finding out what it is they are going to fix for the $600, first. The C25 guys know about outboards since they're experts in it, and have to be. I use it for our dinghy, and didn't want the weight of a 4 stroke. So try fixing it. Those oldies are real goodies. The Johnson is pretty much the same engine, and the price seems right. Your $$$ - your choice. Good luck. Stu

Thanks, Stu

Hey, appreciate your suggestions. hadn't thought about the weight of the 4 stroke, which is definitely a much larger piece of machinery. Will check out the C25 site... Thanks! ---rafa
