Looking for a trailer that I can rent in the Southeastern United States. The boat I am currently trying to purchase is being held up because of moving cost. I dont want to pay 2,000 bucks for somebody else to move my boat when I have a truck that can pull it (2004 F-250) Anyways the boat is a full keel Seafarer 31' that weighs 8700 lbs. thanks, mark

Call Some Marinas

I'm sure you've thought of this already. University Marine on Logan Martin Lake in Pell City, AL had one that I was going to use, last year, but ended up not using. I was going to haul a San Juan 7.7 with it. Not sure if it would fit a 31 footer. I'm not even sure how adjustable it was, but you could try calling them at 205-324-2594. 8,700 pounds is probably okay for your truck, but the trailer for a boat that size is probably another 3,000 pounds, I bet. Total load is going to be pretty heavy. Of course the other thing (probably the most important thing) you have to worry about is the width. You'll need a special permit, of course. Good luck.

Spend the $2000.00

I just bought a Catalina30 in Washington state. I had to bite the bullet and buy a trailer for $7000.00. Cost to haul it over the mountains was going to be @ 3000.00 anyway. For the extra money I now have the trailer and a place to store it until the Ice melts off our lakes. I had done a lot of research on special permits required. If I was just doing one haul to relocate he boat into another waterway I would not bother with a trailer. It would be worth the 2000.00 for someone else to worry about it. Do the research and find out legal load weights. You need to know the maximum weight your trailer is allowed. (This should be on the trailer manufacturers tag.) You will also need to find out the maximum gross weight allowed by Ford for your F250 by model year. (The weigh scale people know where to look so they can write you a ticket if you aren,t legal.) Find out from the Dept of Transportation, maximum height and width for the states you want to travel in. Maximum overall length of vehicle and load. What signs are needed for wide load. You may need to install some clearance lights on the boat for night travel. They want to see bright orange flags on all extremities even for day travel. Buy extras as they get ripped and torn. You need the correct tie down straps too. They can ticket you for too light of a capacity on the strap. You may need a pilot car. You will have to pay oversize permit costs. Consider the costs of fuel for your F250 and pilot car. Who pays if the boat or trailer are damaged doing the haul? Towing a boat that big is not an easy drive My trip was done with a Dodge 2500 with the latest Cummins. Pulled great but I found out I was overloaded by @ 1000 lb. I received a ticket for not having proper plate on the trailer. The scale people made me buy a temporary plate plus one weeks insurance They also wanted me to off load 1000 lb. I did not unload the excess but drove all night on side roads to circumnavigate the next scales. A great experience that I do not want to repeat. I hope all works out well for you and your new boat. Mark, are you sure of the boat weight?

That seems too light. I would guess in the 12-13 thousand range.

Agree with Fred

My 32 ODay is 11K and if your stopped and overloaded you might have to hire someone any way cause the police might not let you move and of course the $$$$ in fines 2000 to have it moved seems cheap

Mark,

DOn't know about your ford but my Dodge is only rated to 12K on the hich and 13, 350 on a goose neck. The boat is 8750 dry, add trailer of 2ooo and "extras" in the boat and your pushing the hitch weight. I don't know of a trailer available big enough in Atlanta that isn't in professional use. Pat

And what about insurance?

Mark: How far are you trying to move this boat (from where to where?). You need to think about permits, insurance if something happens etc. Maybe you can shop around and get someone to tow it for less money. I who have to agree with some others on the real weight of the boat. Our Hunter 31 is close to 10,000.

Mark , here is question you

should ask of yourself and answer for yourself. How much money do you make per hour and how long will it take to make the round trip for getting the boat and bringing it home? What will your costs be to do the job? Will it be cost efficient to do it yourself?

Weight

My Ben 323 is approx. the same weight and it is just under 33 foot. We have trailered it from Colorado to Idaho to Annacortes Wash. and back to Idaho with no problem. Hopefully to Sea of Cortex in about 2 months. I have a Dodge 3500 with the diesel and it pulls well, even over the passes. I bought the truck without a hitch and put a Class 5 hitch on. The hitch is rated at 12000 lb trailer weight and 1200 lb tongue weight. Anyway, it is quite possible to tow yourself. Sail on... Terry

I hauled my Hunter 34 Myself

I hauled my Hunter 34 myself with a 98 Dodge 1 Ton Dually. The boat weighs 11,900 dry and the trailer another 4,000. I called boat us and they did an underwright and insured me to haul it. They asked me several questions to make sure I was compentent enough to haul it. I finally told them (look I'm not some doctor thinking I can save a few bucks hauling it myself and don't have a clue what I'm doing) I have hauled several boats with this one being the largest. Got my oversize load permits and went for it. They routed me through some pretty windy roads because of construction but you just have to take it nice and slow. Tim Welsh Hunter 34 S/V Cabo Wabo

trailer travel

well the boat only has a 8'8" beam and in reality it weighs only 8400 lbs because it does not come with the inboard motor, it was sold before I started looking at the boat. The boat will go from Port Charlotte, FL. to Buford, (lake lanier) GA. about 500 miles. The Ford is a 4x4 quad-cab diesel with a class 5 hitch..I'm not too worried about the pulling part. I just need to find a trailer. P.S. Tim Welsh - that is an incredible photo, nothing beats a cummins ram

Again,

I'm not woried about the truck, if a trailer were around I'd point you to it. I've been lookimg to buy a 30-35ft trailer for a year. Nothing worth while has shown in the area. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Buford, Ga imd_ga@hotmail.com

Mark,

I just won a 30' power boat trailer on EBAy. I should have it in Buford on Monday. If you'ld like to use it with a cradel your welcome to. I might even have a source for a cradel if you get me the draft. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel Buford, Ga imd_ga@hotmail.com
