Hi,

I need to replace lower thermostat housing, which requires removal of the gear case (timing cover). What should I be aware of? The shop manual doesn't explain how the the overspeed linkage connects through the gear case. Do I need to remove any of the speed control level assy which is locked wired or will it pull away clean? I'll go back to the boat and look it over.

Thanks for any suggestions.

IIRC, the lower housing is above the gear case cover. I might be wrong, but these are the two blow up diagrams, which aren't that clear in terms of lining stuff up. I searched through all my engine photos. One is the INSIDE of the gear case cover, thanks to a friends who had an "extra" one (!) and two photos of the housing. Maybe I'm wrong, but if I'm right your work will be much easier.

It looks like you'll have to drop the alternator and remove the bracket.

Good luck.

Appreciate your support. The removal of the lower thermostat housing is blocked by the gear case cover. We pulled the head, and are now wondering if the valves should be removed/lap seat process. I'll look to see if there is evidence of carbon build up on the seats when opened with a valve spring compressor. I have no history on the engine except it's 24 years old.
