I discovered a pin hole oil leak in the pan today of my 1986 C30 (Universal M-25). Looks like the engine will need to be pulled. While it is out it, I plan on some overhaul work. To start, I might as well upgrade to a 3" heat exhchager. Also, the wiring harness will be replaced because it has been diagnosed as losing amperage. The engine will be painted. The engine mounts will be cleaned up. The yard has suggested that this would be a good time for a muffler replacement. The oil dip stick tube will be replaced as it is badly rusted. What else should I be doing to the engine while it is in for some "spa treatment?" Can I save some money and get some of these parts at a Kubota dealer? Thanks for your advice. Mike

Additional Questions

Mike, I suspect that I have the same problem with the same boat and the same engine. I have a strong diesel smell in my cabin and I am planning on going over the gas supply system to find out if it is Fuel or oil. What were the symptoms that led you to the pan leak. I have fuel/oil in my bilge, not a lot but it is always there. How can I tell the difference between oil and fuel? How did you find the leak? Whats it going to cost to get it done? Thanks.

Change the exhaust riser, too

We've had a member in our C34 group change his oil pan with the engine in place. Doubt if you could do that on a C30. Stu

Oil in the bilge

Rick: It it is diesel fuel, I suspect that the smell would be intolerable. Two years ago on a different boat a fuel line clamp loosened. Not much fuel leaked but we could barely stand the odor. I noticed a couple of drips last week and thought that it was fuel, but yesterday I found black sludge under the engine so I had the yard take a look. They told me that I have a pin hole leak in the pan. Last summer while away from the boat for a few weeks we took on considerable water due to the famous Catalina smile. The sump was completely rotted and resulted in the smile opening up badly. Luckily, the boat yard found the water in the cabin as part of a maintenace request. Yeah, we got lucky. I think a another week and she would have been sunk. So, the engine probably didn't take well to all of that salt. I noticed much rust this summer and started of thinking that it would need to be painted. Also, the shift cable rusted tight and snapped. We replaced the shift cable and throttle cable last month at considerable cost. They have since been replaced at much cost. One other thing to look at. Last summer we had some oil in the bilge. Turns out that the dip stick tube was loose. Hope that helps. Mike The yard manager tells me that a typical 20 year boat would need this kind of work anyway.

Dye the Fuel

If there is a question concerning the origin of petro in the bilge, dye the diesel. Then you can see if it is lube oil or fuel. Ask the homeheat #2 oil supplier for some acceptable dye.

Repair the engine in place

I was just wondering about changing the pan in place. I recently read an entry on this forum about a guy who used the boom to hoist up his motor and swing it over onto the dock for repair. If that is possible then you should ceratinly be able to pick it up enough to change the pan. Waddya think?
