need to know the realities of the after effects of thios huge oil spill--i need to get to new orleans airport by may 10th--we are4 in wolf bay and need to know if there is a problem now or if one is going to occur with the traversement of the waterways by private craft between now and then---is very important for me to catch the plane to san diego and there is,as far as i can see, no other way for me to get there with bubbadaboatkat.......if anyone knows the real answer, please post or pm me...thankyou.

i can only find out about the treatment of oil soaked animals at this time.......

Cruise Ships

I heard on the news that they are telling cruise ships they can't go into new orleans and must go up the missisippi.
Don't know much to help you out just praying that this oil spill doesn't do all the damage that it could and God help's us out with this one.
We don't want to see the animals suffer and sure don't want to see any one get hurt with their lively hood.
It's been a month since surgery and back out sailing again, almost 100%.

I doubt you'll get a definitive answer as the situation can be very dynamic - on any given day, some ports may be closed depending on where the slick migrates. There is a good likelihood some ports will be open and you can modify your destination and travel by land to the airport.

Only the CG station in that area will know for sure on any given day and they can't predict in advance. Call them on the VHF when you get close.

Don’t know of any way except Coast Guard New Orleans for a real time report. They should be giving reports on channel 22A.? Or cell phone to them may get quicker response?? The slick was plotted in the paper this morning as not being on shore yet (maybe 30 miles south of Cat Island).. and the wind is blowing it toward the mouth of the river. Wind is SSE out there at 20.. the slick, if it gets into the Miss Sound, would most likely be in the Mississippi Sound, between Cat Island and the shore by tomorrow (Sunday) sometime. from the wind direction and leak location, it seems like the worst of the stuff will probably go ashore from behind the Chandelur Islands over west to Port Fourchon.. There is a chance that the Miss Sound and ICW west from Ship Island may miss the mess, but it looks like a small chance ..
Fly out of Mobile or Pensacola ?? Ride “The Dog” (Greyhound Bus) to NO from either of those.. ??

it's hard to imagine them closeing the icw to traffic. i woul worry about getting socked in with all the oil containment pons. surely the people at wolf bay will try and keep that crap out with several blockades. where does phillip home port?

we are trying to get to slidell, where phillip has his home port---we have been advised the mobil ebay may be boomed in and we have been advised the rigolets are impassable at the railroad bridge--to keep oil lout of the areas....we are so far looking at the pearl river and at the icw to noo orleenz then across lake pontchartrain for routes ......we just need to know where the booms will be obstructing passage....even uscg isnt responding!!!
we have such impeccable timing in our exploits lol.....

am i right in assumeing that transients are scambleing to get up the tenn-tom? route to slidell takes you right into the traffic of hazmat ships. use the force! sorry.. the containment booms have to be serviced, which means moveing. if the coast guard could provide some escort or open channels thru it would help. like capt. ron said "if anything is gonna happen it's gonna happen out there". good luck to you both.

Pardon the pun but this situation is going to be very fluid. It is going to change faster than a war refugee problem. As soon as you can get into sheltered waters then getting home will just be a question of finding water ways that connect and are not boomed off.

I know one thing, I am going to pay much better attention to where the two of you go cruising. I want to stay out of the path of that black cloud that has been following y'all everyday of this trip.

he is smartest of us all--he cant talk about anything!!!

recess--"I know one thing, I am going to pay much better attention to where the two of you go cruising. I want to stay out of the path of that black cloud that has been following y'all everyday of this trip."--actually, we would have been in mexico if it hadnt been for an emergency that has arisen regarding my boats in sin diego--we are trying to get me back to noo orleenzz airport so i can return to homeport and fix the minor problem...lol...had we been in mexico already, i would have merely allowed bubbbadaboatkat to stay with phillip for a short time and i would have flown to sd and returned and he would have remained in mexico until my return and all woulda been a tad different! the moral of story is that when in a rush , the sea gods act in mysterious ways and trials pop up ...lol.....the weather forced me to change tickets and the oil is creating another intellectual challenge to casual cruising...is allll gooood---at loeast we are out sailing--despite the speed bumps--has been a lot of fun and beautiful--even the weather has been gorgeous to look at --despite lightning and .......and on our "suicide runs" lol--we had a wonderful escort of dolphins--huge pods --dancing and having soo much fun--there is no such thing as a bad day cruising!!!

I was referring to all the fronts that kept coming in while y'all were making your way to Fort Meyers. I do not think y'all caught a break the whole way. Still seems like a fun trip until your "friend" flaked out on you. Then you hit the biggest oil slick in history trying to get to your flight back home.

In the years to come strangers are going to think you are embellishing about the trip to Mexico.

how does the song go--"baby the rain must fall."..lol...is alll goood is a learning experience--the fronts taught us about noaa weather lol,, and how to sail very very fast with no visibility and that formosa 41s should do well in this body of water--lol we were in phillips seidelmann--i think we broke about everything there is to break on a boat--was fun doing it..LOL....wanna buddy boat next time???? LOL should be fun!! definitely an adventure ......the dolphins were awesome and the babies are sooooo cute---the fishing was excellent---i will be doing this again as soon as i can get my formosa gone from sin diego--is why we had to run back so hard--have some bs to attend to in kalifornikation...sailing in frontal winds is very very fast ....... even tho visibility can be short...lol..is just part of the adventure......i donot like returning before the trip begins--is most depresssing.....never did make it to mexico---dratitall....next one is in my own boat so i donot have to worry about "friends"...lol.......life is an interesting adventure....the speed bumps can be weird tho..lol.....

ross---this may be a stickier than fluid situation..lol....we donot know as yet how we will get to slidell if we can---will find out as we go---who needs plans, anyway!!!! i thought the mess should be burned--light a torch and let it burn for a while---but what do i know of environmental impact wrenches...lol

Check out Google Earth for up to date satellite images.

If you go to Google Earth you get a pretty good view of the oil slick. If you click on the red icon a window will pop up with a link to KML that has a time lapse accounting of the slick. The first time I viewed it I got it to play but when I tried tonight it did not work. Let me know if it works for you.

just heard the winds are gusting to 29 kn. have you tried contacting this fellow? Lt. cmdr. Eric Denley USCG... #304-733-0198 ext. 2103. looking on their logs, they had an oil barge boomed off and were allowing traffic to pass. jb
