New sheaves!

Robby: I assume that you need new sheaves. You can either go up the mast or have the the mast removed from the boat. This can sometimes be a difficult task so you may not know until you try it. If you do not need to replace sheaves, you do not need to go up the mast. You can just hook the new halyard to the old and pull it though.

Just Curious

Why does you rigger say you should change the wire halyards to rope? Are they worn or is it for some other reason? The wire halyards on my 1981 Hunter 27 look to be in good shape and still work well.

One more thing

To replace the lines (assuming the sheeves are okay), conventional wisdom is to configure a paperclip so it grabs both ends. God forbid it falls apart up there, so a better idea is to sew the two bitter ends together flat using loosely sewn fishing line. Provides flexibility to go over the top, but strength to stay together.

Try it, you'll like it!

Bill: You need to try the "paper clip method". I was also of the old sew-n-sew school, until I tried the paper-clip method. I see no reason to ever go back. Normally when one is replacing a rope halyard with a rope halyard you can just cut off the shackle and use the paper clip. When replacing a wire halyard, it may be a problem to do this unless the person was going to put their own shackle on AFTER the line was fed.
