Shipmates, I just bought a 1985 Hunter 23. The fixed black plexiglass cabin windows are trashed, one with a big crack. Before I buy raw plexiglass stock and go through the pain of cutting, routing and drilling countersunk screw holes, is there a source for a standard window and gasket for this model? Thanks, Tate Westbrook

Hunter Marine, go to the archives and read before you do the job unless you have done it already . There are a number of us who have bought new plastic and gone thru the pain of removing the old along with the nasty caulking only to over tighten the new plasic thereby cracking it , good luck Mike

You might get Jake Kohl to make your windows. He made a pair for me. His web site is well worth visiting.

Window replacement

We have the same model and replaced ours last year. We romoved the old ones, and took them to a glass shop where they cut and drilled the holes for us. They made them out of Lexan. They look great and only cost about 50 bucks for both. You will notice the window opening is square, and the windows are not. We held the window in place and marked from the inside of the boat the window. We tapes off this area, and then sprayed painted the rest of the window black. This hide all the caulk around the window. I am sure this is clear as mud. If you need me to elaborate feel free to email me at david_w_gottfeld@yahoo.com Good luck. Also I am right up the street from you on the Magothy. I would be happy to show you. Dave

Thanks for the insight!

Thanks to all for your comments. Dave and Larry, thanks for the great gouge! The Jake Kohl website was a great resource, and what a reference for how to do the job right! Thanks for the link!

Black GOO alternative

I repaired my severely leaking windows by using two layers (one one each side of the screws) of architectural grade foam glazing tape in lieu of the black goo...so far no sign of leakage under hose pressure. This double sided tape is used to hold and seal windows in place in high rise buildings. I was afraid of breaking the windows also so i carefully traced them on paper before re-installing. Good luck with your project.

Hunter direct has them

I got a quote of $90 direct from Hunter about 2 years ago. I also had a cracked plexiglass hatch. I did that one first and the windows are next on the list of projects. Good input from this forum.

source for glazing tape

I got the tape from a commercial glazing company, very cheap too...I used the same stuff to seal a series of skylights on my house...hasnt leaked in 8 yrs. The tape is 3/8" wide by about 1/8" thick when compressed...and very flexible...the photo shows the tape on the window just before I screwed it down.

$142

I have the same problem. Hunter will sell you a set for $142, without shipping. The black stuff is Dow Corning 795. I also got pricing on a local glass shop, and it was less, $55 per side. They use 3/16" lexan. There are several colors of lexan.
