Need some centerboard advice

I have a 1981 O'Day 22 shoal keel/centerboard. I havehad her for just over a year and am only the secondowner. The PO tells me that the centerboard pendanthas never been replaced. It looks to be simply a cotton-braid clothesline rope that is showing its age, and that'sonly the portion I can see.I have a two-ton hoist in my shop which I intend to use tolift her off the trailer and let the CB drop by itself.What can I expect to see? Does the pendant attach to theCB through a hole with a splice in the pendant? Is therea shackle or thimble or other sort of connector?What type and size of line should I use as replacement?I'm thinking about anchor line since a lot of the pendantspends its time permanently in the water (fresh).I'd like to be as well prepared as possible so I only haveto lift the boat once.Bob / "Bonaventure"

Bob - I have not personally ever changed the CB line on an O'day 22, but I had a customer in the store I used to work in who describes an eye screw (bolted?) into the trailing edge of the board with the line attached to that.Anyone where actually done this?Justin - O'day Owners' Web

If its similar to an 83 O'day 25 the the line is spliced to a shackle that is thru bolted to the trailing edge of the centerboard. Use double braided dacron line from a marine source......let us know if you have a different set up. Ron

Hi Bob,I have a 1979 masthead centerboard 22 foot Oday that I also replaced the pennant on. When I lowered the board while the boat was high and dry (on the blocks), I noticed that the pennant disappeared into the end of the blade. I saw what looked like a plug on the blade, about two inched in the blade from where the pennant went in. I drilled out the plug and found that the blade was drilled out previously and a cross tap was made through the end of the blade for the pennant to feed into from the boat's hull. I replaced the pennant and tied a firm figure eight knot in the hole of the blade. I did not bother to fill in the hole to smooth the blade as I do not really see that sort of velocity through the water in my old 22. At speed, on a reach, she'll vibrate a little from below that I attribute to the turbulence off the knot in the blade. If yours has a shackle, all the better. Replaced cb pendant on O,Day 23

Bob, I have just hauled my 23 out and one of the things I did was replace the line going to the cb. On the 23 the line goes to a short cable which pins through the cb. I replaced it with 14in.double braid darcon. Also I spliced it to the thimble on the cable which I think is worth it.George
