removehtml]Went to the boat yesterday - a 1996 280 - and discovered the nut was missing from the exterior hull fitting that routes the bilge water to the outside of the boat. Looks to be ~ .75" but I have no idea how to start looking for a replacement. Also, the drain for the chain locker is identical as best I can tell. All the "thru-hull" fittings I've found have a one-piece mushroom end that mates on the outside of the hull and the threaded piece is inside. Any suggestions on what to look for???? Error: Error: expected [/URL], but found [/removehtml] instead[/removehtml]

Sounds like you are describing

the white plastic through hulls that many Hunters, and other boats, have that are used to exit the boat for the bilge, anchor locker, etc. If so, you'll need to replace the whole through-hull, an easy and inexpensive job. When the outer edge of these wear out, usually from UV, it appears to be a nut that held it place from the outside, but it really is not. If you do replace them, I'd recommend bronze even it costs more and is more noticeable. They are much stronger and you'll never have to do it again.

I think GuyT and Warren have probably identified it. I suspect . .

that the part of the fitting that is inside our boat is a 90 since (IIRC) the bilge pump discharge line follows the hull up to the thru-hull and is routed out. Not so easily seen in the picture but I'll bet a brew that the fitting has two nuts, one for the inside and one for the outside to allow installation of a 90* fitting in close spaces. Warren, I'll take a closer look and if I can get to the rest of the fitting, I may replace it w/ bronze.

Temporary fix

If you want a quick temp fix till you find the part, the outer 'nut' is typically the same size and material as the lower nut on a toilet tank flush valve from Home Depot, and/or they are typically availabe in a plumbing supply store. Clark's assesment is exactly correct as to how they were installed on the boat and the Rule industries part will probably last another 15 years. Only the outer nut was deteriorated after 18 years on my 28.5 and it's the same fitting on the bilge pump overboard discharge end of the bilge pump hose.
