I'm about to make an offer on a 1983 Hunter 34. After my inspection (survey & sea trial to come) it's apparent the sails are original and need to be replaced. Where can I go and find a good set of used sails. I have no intention of racing at this time. The boat has a shoal draft and will be used primarily in the Chesapeake Bay. How much am I looking at$$$$. Thanks.

SAILS

Joe: Just replaced the original sails on my '85 H31. After talking to MANY sailmakers (Hood, North, et. al.) I went with Quantum Sails (they have a number of lofts). I felt they had the best value/price since I also wasn't planning to race. The total for a 135% jib, 2x2 main with 2 reef points, and sail cover (sort of covered in the price) was just over $3,000. That was easily $1,000 less than I was quoted from the other sailmakers. The 6 week time frame for delivery is because the sails are made in S. Africa and then shipped to the US. The sails were just delivered and I've only had time for one short sail, but they look great and have great shape. Have a big sail planned for this weekend so will have more data then. Good luck! Tim L. (S/V "TIDE") looking better in Hampton Roads!

I bought new for cruising

New sails make a big difference for use cruisers and daysailors, too. Using a local loft also means you can get their sailmaker involved in your decision (even if you go for used.) He may be able to recut the originals. In my case, once he saw our sails, and understood that we really are cruisers, our sailmaker (Doyle, choosen after a web search of pricing among 4 lofts and talking on the phone with sailmakers) recommended that we keep our 135, and get a new main and asymetrical spinnaker. The results for original/recut to new Doyle main and asymetrical spinnaker on Lady Lillie, a '77 h27 were: + 1 to 1 1/2 knots in moderate winds (10-15 knots true.) - 5 degrees of heel (the Admiral loves this part. used sails

Atlantic Sail Traders--Bradenton, FL Bacon & Assoc.--Annapolis, MD There are other used sail lofts that I can't recall at the moment--one is in CA. Do a web search and you should be able to find them. Most used sail lofts have an on-line inventory page that you can use.

Try Bacons in Annapolis

Check Bacon & Associates on Legion Ave, just off West Street in Annapolis. They stock much used equipment and have always pretty much specialized in sails. Their web site where you can check their inventory is baconsails.com. Phone # is 410-263-4880. They are not open late or on weekends, so call before you go. Bruce

Sail Replacement vs Re-Resining

I had to purchase a new genoa when I got my boat. I own an 88 Legend 37. The main was original and had about 1/2 life left in it. I needed new "leathers" on the main and a small hole patched. I sent the sail to a company called "Sail Care, Inc" Ford City, PA. Their telephone number is 800-433-7245. They repaired the problems and I also had them "re-resin" the sail. When I got it back is was just as stiff as the new Genoa and also as white as the new sail. The cost of the re-resining was $.85 per square foot totaling for my main was $385.00. Far less than a new sail. This will be the second season on the re-resined main. The people at Sail Care said it would last 3 to 4 seasons and it could be redone. This is an alternative you might want to consider. Check the back of Sail or Cruising World magazines for other used sail companies. Good Luck,
