Need rudder for '78 O'Day 25

I hear your moans over damaging your rudder.
First, there are many discussions of replacement and repair in archives. Search out prior discussions. Each new discussion may not include all or even reference prior discussions.
Second, because of you budget issues, seriously consider rebuilding old rudder notwithstanding serious damage.
You would be amazed how good you can rebuild anything that is FRP or wood or foam based with epoxy and glass mat.
What no work area? Try two saw horses and a several 2x4's to make outback work bench. Clean all parts that you have and lay out as they are supposed to be.
Learn to use dowels to hold pieces together while using mat and epoxy to rebuild. Use an epoxy filler with long strands of fiberglass to fill cracks and voids.
Unfortunately, after you rebuild as described above, you may have stronger rudder than before...

I totally agree with Ed, Bryan. Rebuild it. You're not going to find a used one anywhere. One of the guys on this forum built a rudder for his O'Day 25 out of plywood and fiberglass about a year or so ago. It's doable, believe me. One of our club members rebuilt a spade rudder for a 74 O'Day 27 that he picked up cheap. It worked fine.

I rebuilt mine in one afternoon - marine grade plywood doubled up and 'West' Epoxy as a sealer - it is so strong... I just leave it in the water all the time. As long as you are diligent about sealing it up you'll be good. Theres picture documentation in my profile "PROJECT RACING RUDDER". I can send you the dimensions... but I think they are here in the archives somewhere...
Thank you, Gabriel. I was hoping that you would chime in on this one. You did a super job in building your rudder and he can too. The rudders on the O'Day 25 aren't as involving as the tip up rudders on the O'Day 192 and 222 where you have a sheet Aluminum rudder head.

We need to have a citation handy on the fact that the original design team headed by John Deknatel designed a kick up rudder for the O'Day 25 and those plans are in the Mystic Seaport Ships Plans Museum availabe for a few shekels.
The reason this topic appears so often is that on the 25 the rudder extends below the keel. This issue has been addressed by the design team, albeit late. This was one issue that was addressed in the O'Day 26 which Rudy says is really the same boat.
So if you have a 25, order the plans and learn to cold mold the answer to the problem. Then you can sail as sailing was meant to be, looking forward instead of down...
