I want to get roller furling for my 1976 Catalina 27 which I use mostly for day sailing in bays. I am not very knowledgable about this. Need all the help I can get in making the decision. Type; new or used?; I also need a a new sail for it and wonder if the best thing to do is get with the sail maker here and just have them handle it all. But I do like to be informed so I can participate and know what I'm getting and why. Thanks for any info or ideas or opinions. c. posey

Roller furling

I had a 1977 27 Catalina and installed a CDI furling system. My intentions were to keep the boat only a few more years so price was also the issue, since I knew I would never recouperate the money. I liked it very much, particulary since it is made out of a very flexible plastic, and is guaranteed for life even if the boat yard equipment runs it over. I always step the mast every year, and since it's so flexible I have no fear of breaking it. I do recommend that you get the optional bearings which makes it a lot easier to furl in. I think it a great dollor value. I have a Catalina 30 now with the standard furler that came with it, (Hood) and I liked the CDI better. Good luck

Same experience as Pat D.

I bought a CDI flexible furler for my Grampain 26 a couple of years ago, and I've been very pleased. Fewer parts, greater simplicity, greater reliability. In a Practical Sailor survey, current owners of the CDI were unanimous in saying they would buy it again. And it costs less! My Catalina 30 has a Hood, but the CDI is easier to use.
