'84 H31 Scheduled with the marina to unstep my mast on monday to seal mast leak. Got the shrouds and stays loose and ready to disconnect, but can't figure out how the boom disconnects from the mast. It's a knuckle type arrangement, but I see no pins, screws or bolts holding it on. I have got to have it ready monday morning or I'm up the creek. Any help really appreciated.....Gary

Here You Go

This should help you. There are two types of goosenecks one with a pin and one without. Sounds like you got the old style without the pin. Here's a link to show you the break down of parts to your gooseneck. http://www.rigrite.com/Spars/Isomat_Spars/Isomat_Booms/NB26_oldstyl_gsnk_assem.html

You need to lift it!

Gary: You need to remove the sail and raise the boom so it is parallel to the mast. Then you should be able to remove it. I assume you have removed the snap rings!

OK...Think I've got it, but.....

Yes, I do have the old style gooseneck. Thanks for the links to rig-rite. Haven't been able to get to the boat since reading posts. I'll remove the sail and lift boom parallel to mast as you suggest, but not sure of location of "snap rings". Are they easy to locate and remove? Are they the ones shown in the diagram (NB1-5K)which hold the ball halves together? Sheesh! I can't believe this is so complicated! Can one person handle this boom removal? Thanks so much for your help....Gary

Snap rings

Yes they are the ones shown in the diagram (NB1-5K) they hold the Plastic Ball Halves in place, (need to have them both jeff) Need to remove to release the boom.

Got it off....

Just got back and you guys saved me again. Just as you said....lifted the boom and off it came. However, the snap rings were GONE! That could have made for some interesting sailing. I'll probably order new ball halves and rings (of course), with everything else I'm replacing. Everything else looks a fine. Thanks again folks......Gary

snap rings

Gary; When you lifted up the boom to remove it from the goose neck, at what point do the ball halves come off? Do they come off when you remove the rings or do they stay on until the boom is lifted? I have a 1984 H31 and have replaced the rings a few times when they have gone missing. They seem to come un sprung and disappear. So, if the ball halves still on until the boom is taken off, why are the rings necessary as the boom won't fall off if it has to be raised up so far to be removed. Rigrite says that the rings are necessary and also that they do not have a conversion kit to change the older gooseneck into the newer type. Any info out there as to a retro conversion. Thanks, Mac.

Apparently, the rings are insurance....

The ball halves come off when the boom is lifted 5-10 degrees. My theory is the rings probably minimize wear of the ball halves. Mine were sort of wobbling maybe more than usual without the snap rings. Remember, my snap rings were missing. When I lifted the rear of the boom up (relative to mast) the ball halves became loose and I was able to get them out, and then the boom came off. Unless the ball halves were very badly worn, I don't think the boom could accidentally come off while sailing.

Ooops,,,,clarification

The halves came off when the boom was lifted 5-10 degrees relative to the mast. Way up in other words.

the ball valves came off when the boom was almost parallel to the mast ? just making sure I havent been lucky so far!
