I don't think that's original - I don't have a picture of mine ('87, #88), but it looks like this from D&R Marine, where you can buy a new one for a cool $1550.

I did find this replacement at D and R. It is what I need but the Stainless is too expensive. Has anyone seen the cast aluminum version (original part) of this anywhere?

The original is stainless on my boat and every other 35 I've seen.

Have you looked for a replacement in cast as a 34? It might be the same, I think the major difference between the 34 and 35 is the transom.

From my research so far. It looks like earlier years were made of cast aluminium. Later they were changed to stainless. I was able to talk with Rudy. (Yes, he is still around.) He has not had a request for the new stainless stem head bow roller shown above for 8 years and he sold the last one. He gave me the name of the company that might have had the blueprint but the company no longer has it. The company that originally made them is out of business.

I went to a local marina today to see if I could find another example of the stem head that I need. Almost every sailboat new and old had a single stainless strap that connected to the forestay and roller furling drum. Even a smaller model O'day used a stainless steel strap. I wonder if any of the newer 86 to 89 34/35's used a stainless strap instead of the combination stem head plate and anchor roller? I have a call into Rudy but I have not heard back yet.

Can anyone think of why I wouldn't be able to convert mine over to a SS strap? Much larger Catalina's and Beneteau's have them. What load factors would need to be considered and what thickness of SS would be needed?

Any help on this would be very much appreciated. I'm running out of options.

Not an O’Day 35, but here is what my O’Day 322 looks like...double roller, cast aluminum I think.

My '87 35 has a cast aluminum stem head fitting with a cast stainless Mantus Anchor Mate and a Rocna 15. There is also a stainless strap that acts as a chainplate for the headstay.

Thank you for information and pictures. It looks like O’Day or a PO made some changes in your later model. Are you able to see how the bottom “U” clamp is connected to the chainplate? Mine has a pin that goes through the side pieces of the cast aluminum and does not connect to the chainplate.

I was able to complete the job with a chain plate that I found in the Sailor's Exchange in St. Augustine. Had it modified to fit my boat and had it checked out by a rigger. All is good with the world again.Sign in - Google Accounts
