My plastic fuel tank has sprung a leak where the cap screws on. I don't think I can patch this with any sort of sealant or glue. It is not the cap leaking either. Any suggestions on where to buy a new tank for a 3.5 hp Nissan 2 stroke via internet. I purchased new about 1998. Thanks.

You can find a fuel tank at

any authorized Nissan dealer. Simply google Nissan/Tohatsu outboard motors for the manufacturer's website, then do a dealer search for your area. Here's the Tohatsu page for chicago area dealers: http://www.tohatsu.com/dealersearch/zsearch.asp?ZipSearchSubmit=1&City=chicago&State=IL&Category=Both&RADIUS=30&submit2=Search Here's the Nissan page for chicago area dealers: http://www.nissanmarine.com/search/zsearch.asp?ZipSearchSubmit=1&City=chicago&State=IL&Category=Both&RADIUS=30&submit2=Search

fuel tank

Pat, There is nothing unique about your Nissan fuel tank. You can buy these tanks at any marine retailer or even auto supply stores. Buy a new tank and swap out the existing fuel fitting from your leaking tank. Problem solved!

Mercury Out boards by Tohatsu

I had a Mercury 2.2 hp that was almost identical to my tohatsu 3.5hp that I just bought. I think the only difference is the label. The diference in power is internal. I don't know if it is the tuning or different bore and stroke. I suspect that it is just tuning. I think that the Nissan is the same motor.

Seadaddler , The Nissan in the Photo

The Nissan in the photo looks exactly like my Tohatsu 3.5 and the old Mercury 2.2 that I gave away. The local mercury dealer had a plastic tank in stock but it wasn't cheap. I was able to "weld" my cracked tank nipple using a magnifying glass and the sun. The motor was still working when I gave it to a friend but the plastic tank around the cap had cracked. It must be a design problem. I wanted the extra power and reliability of a newer larger engine.

the engine does have an internal tank...

...and I do believe this is a defect. I thought I saw a replacement tank for $125 and I think that is outrageous. I was thinking of doing some sort of weld as MoonSailor had done. The engine is otherwise perfect so I have to try something. I will obviously have to remove the tank and wash it out before attempting the welding process unless someone out there can recommend an different type of repair. Thanks.

Nissan Gas tank

If it is stil under warranty, nissan parts in Texas should replace it nc...they did for me. The small engines from Nissan & Merc are made by Thaisu (sp?? but you gret the idea). Merc is the modst expensive, then Nissan, Then Tiastu. That's basically because of the dealer/parts distribution-Merc parts and dealers are more readily availabe.. Find a merc dealer and he'll have a gas tank that fits the nissan. Bob

I ordered one from...

... my local dealer. I couldn't believe prices varied so much. This one is supposed to cost me only $34. He had to order it of course. So hopefully all is solved. Looks like an easy job to replace. Thanks again for the help.
