I have been sailing for more than 30 years on my boats. They ranged in size from 12' to 30'. I now have a 22' Venture and am looking for regular sailing buddies to sail locally out of Long Beach or Ventura, California. I keep my boat on its trailer in the Lancaster/Palmdale area but have no problem with trailering to anywhere from San Diego to Santa Barbara and sailing to Catalina or the islands off of Ventura including Santa Barbara Island. Contact me at novelman@adelphia.net to discuss this. I sail year-around and in most types of weather except Santa Anna's. Novelman

Nice offer....

What a nice offer. It will be interesting to read the responses about any sailing clubs or just how sailors meet other sailors. A problem that I often run into when inviting people to go sailing is they will often ask if they can bring their children or girlfriends. It's not that I dislike children but it is such a pleasure to have fellow sailors onboard who consider it a sport and not a boat ride. I have a small boat and it can be difficult to steer, trim and tack by myself with clueless people in the way of the lines or winches. Does anyone else have this problem? I don't mean to sound negative, I'm just having one of those sleepless nights. Jack

sailing buddies

After 30 years of sailing and my old sailing buddies in their 50's, 60's and 70's, I seem to be running out of regular sailing buddies. For years I sailed solo in my 24' Windrose sloop and my 30' Catalina sloop but nowdays I am just not enjoying solo near as much and it is becoming more work to launch and retrieve my 22' Venture, especially in Long Beach where there are no finger docks next to the ramp. I usually sail for 2 or 3 days when I go unless I sail to Catalina then it is 3-5 days. Well we will se how many real sailors there are out their. Novelman

Jack, I guess it a little far for you to volunteer however, if you ever get out West e-mail me and we'll take a spin to Catalina to see the whales and porpoise as well as having a party. Novelman

Jack......I agree!

Although I love to sail with other's aboard, sometimes they just get in the way! If I am going to be singlehanding, I'd rather be by myself!!! I let everyone know that when we sail, it is a working boat and they will be expected to steer, help raise and lower (and flake) the main, haul a line or two and police up lines after they are used. I don't do it in a nasty way, I just let them know sailing is better and more fulfilling when you are actually a part of the sailing and not just a spectator! Novelman, I wish I were on the left coast! If I can ever get enough time off to head your way, I'll definitely be in touch! Unitl then, I have to wait until retirement! Jack (Atlantic City), How much longer to retirement? Hope I'm still kicking then. I have been retired for 13 years and love it. If you would like to see a copy of my retirement newsletter (free) just e-mail me at novelman@adelphia.net Duane (Novelman)

Got an Idea....

Just finished my first season back to sailing again.Purchased my 222 O'Day this spring and joined the wed evening fun class racing. There are quite a few retiree's that like to get together. Just maybe there is some kind of weekly group near you where you can find other sailors.

pycharlie, Thanks,it's a good suggestion but I live 100 miles (2 hours by freeway) from the ocean. I am really looking for individuals or possibly informal sailing clubs located in greater Los Angles or graater Ventura/Oxnard area. Nothing formal or time consuming, just sailing. Novelman

Venture Yacht Club

Duane, Have you tried the Venture Yacht Club (www.vycsd.com) or other southern California trailer sailor clubs? I am not a club member but have been approached a couple of times in San Diego at a launch ramp by some friendly members. The first time was when we had a 26S MacGregor and most recently with our 260 Hunter. You might find people willing to crew or at a minimum another boat to sail with. We enjoy being able to trailer our boat. During the winters, like you, we sail out of the marinas between Ventura & Long Beach. Easter week we head to San Diego & summers are spent at Huntington Lake. At the places we dock we get to know our neighbors and I have found most people are interested in company. One retired fellow we met in San Diego visits his boat every few days but only sails on the weekends when he can count on more boats in the bay to play with. I would expect that making friends with dock mates in a marina would also result in some new buddies. I wish I was retired so I could join you. I am sure I would learn alot from a guy who has been practicing this for 30 years. Ed

Ed, Why don't you meet me some time at either Ventura or Alamitos Bay, Long Beach (my personal favorite) and we could sail togather or possibly even sail to Two Harbors at Catalina. We could tie up at the same end of a dock. I usually use 22A OR 22B for a 2 or 3 day sail because it closest to my prefered eating places and to West Marine. Contact me by E-mail at novelman@adelphia.net. I would also be interested in sailing from Long Beach to San Diego and back in the summer. Duane (Novelman)

... get a copy of Santana magazine- it's free, you'll find it at any chanlery. They sponsor a "crew" list twice a year for skippers and crew to make connections. There are daysailors, weekenders, racers and long range crew requests. I have had pretty good luck finding crew racing opportunities this way. Another source is the local sailing schools, such a Orange Coast College or Mission Bay Aquatic Center (San Diego colleges). The students are not all kids, I went through the program when I was in my forties, and many are looking for opportunities to get more experience.
