It’s time for new sails. I have a 1984 Catalina 25 Tall Rig. I would like to have a new main, fully footed, fully battened, Cunningham, Catalina emblem and numbers, I also need a new roller furling jib, 135, tell tale window and I would like sunbrella UV cloth. I saw on this site where they offer acrylic white as standard. I’m not even familiar with that. If you follow the links from this site the Main is $1151 and the jib is $1121 for a total of $2,276 for 5.6 oz Dacron. Sounds like a lot to me. I found a local guy but he only makes loose footed mains. I don’t know anything about loose footed mains. I would appreciate any advice I can get Thanks Steve

Two sources that get good feedback are The Sail Warehouse and FX Sails. I used FX Sails for my new 135% genoa and am very pleased. You can search the archives for more opinions.

Loose footed main

I have used a loose footed main for years with great success. The main advantage of the loose footed main is to have more and easier draft adjustment. You can add draft by easing the outhaul or flaten and bring draft forward by tightening the outhaul. I would venture about 80% of racers have loose footed mains. The pricing you mentioned doesn't sound that bad to me.

Wejust bought a new main and 150 genoa.

I currently sail a 1980 Catalina 22 and have owned and extensively sailed a 38 IP and 26 Hunter. Both bigger boats had fully battened mains. Our 22 had a partial battened, secure footed main. I replaced the sails on the 22 this spring with sails from "Catalina Direct". They are made by Ulman Sail lofts. The main is their offshore grade, fully battened with a loose foot. It also has draft stripes, cunningham, numbers, Catalina ID, leech and foot trim lines and sailbags. The workmanship is very good, the price was also very competative and delivery prompt. The genoa was equal in all respects to the main. I love the loose foot on the main. It allows finer degrees of adjustment and has better response to those adjustments. I highly recommend both companies and their products. Ray
