My 40' hunters queen mattress was destroyed. I cant afford to have a custom mattress built (spring type). Does anyone have experience with foam or something? what did you do?

I thought about the regular old foam or maybe the memory foam. what i was thinking to do is cut a thick piece of foam to fit, and then have a heavy material like canvas or something sewn into a zippered cover. I'm thinking that might give it some support and keep it from squishing down so bad. I guess it would be kinda like the standard cushions. I have this type of deal on my settees and v-berth.

any thoughts?

Thanks

Think about latex. It is not foam, it is rubber. A latex mattress can last for 20 years or more. The make them in different densities, so you need to decide what level of firmness you like. They can also glue two densities of latex together. Latex also does not mildew.

They normally sell latex where they make custom beds. They can make a cover for it our of the same stuff that a regular home mattress is made from. A latex mattress is as good or better than an inner spring, so check it out.

I would not suggest it for your regular sitting areas because you don't need the quality and it is more expensive than most foam products.

Re: Need new mattress...

I bought a nice firm multi-zone queen polyurethane foam mattress from Ikea for $299 for the boat. Its their model Sultan Favang. There is a zipper all around the edge of the ticking so it can be taken off and washed. It can also be taken off for access to the foam so the foam can be trimed to fit.

Its designed and made as a mattress by pros that can be easily customized for a boat. And the cost of the finished product is the same as a single zone piece of foam.

All the details are on the Ikea web site; once in just put the name of the mattress in the search box.

Have you contacted Hunter to see if they have and how much a replacement mattress would be?

If you do get a big piece of foam. Mark it a little over sized and use a 7" variable speed sander with 80 or 40 grit to shape the outside edge. It comes out very smooth. Cutting it with a knife or razor will leave it a bit jagged. But practice first, there is basically no resistance by the foam, it just disappears where you touch the sander to it.

An electric knife is an easy way to cut foam. If you can lay a 2x4 on it and have two friends stand on it, it will compress the foam.... The sander suggestion is also a good way to make vegetation for the train layout (at home).
