I am currently very intersted in purchasing a S 37. I would really apprecite hearing from anyone who has any information concerning these boats. Good or bad. I have never been aboard one of them, but the pics look good. The boat I am interested in is in New Jersey, and I am in Louisiana, so any advice before I head up that way will be very helpful. Thanks in advance Phil Prater aka Nice N Easy email sailaway_78@hotmail.com

S37 info

I bought my 37 new in 1981 and still have it. Have taken i to Bermuda and back 3 times. Like any other purchase it has good and weak points. The boat sails well (I currently race it), is quite sturdy, the only problems have been with the rudder post leaking and blisters on the bottom. Let me know if you have specific questions. If you can get to the Marylsnd area (Wash DC or Annapolis)your welcom to go sailing with me.

Thanks for the response

Gary, Thanks for the replyl. The boat I am looking at is somewhere around Sandy Hook, NJ. Pics look good, and have talked to the guy on the phone along with several emails. Seems to be a good boat, and he sounds like a decent sort of a guy. Reason the boat is for sale is he had a heart attack, and by pass surgery. As I am in New Orleans area, wanted as much info as possible before the trip that way. Should I buy this boat will be coming your way, mid to late Sept. By the way, this one is also an 81 model. One more question. How difficult is it to single hand this boat, assume the boat is set up correctly. Thanks Phil Prater

S37 Responce

Hi, I have an 82 Sidelmann Shoal Draft. Have been very happy with it. Spent two years crusing the boat to Trinidad from my hom port and back. Had a few problems but no more than any other boat of this age. The Rudder post leaks under way. I will take out the rudder and fix it this fall or spring. I just resealed all the windows and have been replacing the headliner with white arborite. We do well raceing the boat on our lake. I have equipped the boat with #1, #2 and a genniker as well as the main. We plan totake her back south and spend the winter aboard in the Bahamas not this winter but next. Good luck you won't be disapointed, Gord ladysimcoe@nexicom.net

Arborite?

What is the Arborite mateerial you are replacing the head liner with? We have started scraping all the old glue off and have done some test painting... It would be much easier to put up a new headliner but we are woried the same problem will occure...

Arborite is the same stuff they glue down on counter tops available at most building supply places. I made a frame using a glue gun and 1/4" battons around the area to be replaced. Transferred the outline to the arboraite and cut with an arborite cutter the panels fit perfectly. I put some dabs of glue to hold it inplace and then replaced the teak battens around the edges. Voila the boat looked great again. It won't rot like the old plywood liner did and looks just great.
