I have been cleaning up a 1966 Mariner that I bought in January. About ready for the water. There is no backstay with the boat and some photos look like the back stay is a nylon line?? I would sure appreciate any information on this. The boat is a 1966 hull 14226 and class number 756. The boat is a swing keel model. Thanks!

Backstay

Jim - The mariner should have a backstay - it should be wire from the mast to the deck, or to a block a few feet about the deck with line to the deck if it is to be adjustable. Contact: STUART MARINE, Inc. P.O. Box 469 Rockland, ME 04841 Attn: David Whittier (207)594-5515 for a replacement. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Mariner backstay

I just bought a '76 2 2 with a cable backstay and barrel type turnbuckle that needed some minor work. Turnbuckle is shackle pinned to stern chainplate which is slightly off center as I recall. I don't know if earlier Mariners had same, but suspect so. I have yet to rig boat so am still a Mariner novice. I can describe further details of what I have if you don't get better advice.
