Need info for Onancock,VA

Since it is cold as a deep freeze outside. Joan and I are planning a spring sail. Kinda fun sitting in bed on Sunday morning drinking coffee with the charts spread out. We plan to goto Onancock,VA on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay. I'm looking for information on the channel, from the charts it looks very skinny and not deep. Couple of different charts show 4-5 ft. Anyone got recent local info? BTW, Java draws 5ft. Jim S/V Java

My chart indicates a controlling depth

of 6 feet in 1995-96 and there are no notes about shoaling.

Great..

little town and you can believe the link. We had no issues with a 5.5 draft. Interesting place to start some bike touring from as well.

Onancock Creek Channel

Jim...The 2007 Mid-Atlantic Waterway Guide says dredging, commercial work boats and gravel barges keeps the channel entry 10.5 feet deep to 15-foot to flashing green "9," and 10 foot to the town docks. It does advise caution re sand bars outside the channel markers which are bare at low tide, "but if you move carefully from buoy to buoy, you should encounter no problems."

May be Outdated info but....

We anchored there in 1987 and loved it. There was a little bakery right there downtown that was the only thing open early in the morning and where friendly locals gathered for coffee. There was a nice restaurant with good food right on the waterfront. As to depth, we were chartering a Bristol 35.5, so depth was not a concern. The anchorage afforded good holding and was not crowded. Oops, Admiral says my CRS has kicked in. That was our O'day 30 with 4'11" draft and that trip was the early 90's.

no problem with 5 ft...

We were there last year, you'll have no trouble with 5'. Just go a little slow and try to do it during daylight. Town is very nice, good resteraunts/bars, nice people-- great weekend spot. We're hoping to go back this year some time. B

Great place to visit - one of our favorites! We were there several times last year with a 4'6" draft and never came close. If you anchor out at the mouth of the little creek to your starboard side right before you get to the town, you should have no problem. It seems a little shallow right at the town docks if you want to stay in a slip, but there were plenty of deeper draft boats in there when we were there, so probably not an issue. There can be a little cross current in there pulling into those slips, so watch that - we tried to spin a 360 in front of the slips and just about got stuck one time. That, however, was our fault for trying to back into the slip with the cross current and the wind blowing us in the same direction. The anchorage is really nice right there though - plenty of room for several boats.
