Need ideas for diesel replacement on 1978 C27

Just doing some preliminary fact finding on what engine I should consider to replace my aging Petter ACW1. Has anyone repowered their Petter diesel equipped C27 (mine is a 1978) and if so, what did you get? How much did it cost you for the new diesel. Specifics would be very helpful. Thanks in advance. Convert to Outboard?

Have you considered converting to an outboard and improving your sailing performance? I think that you'll find some relevant exchanges in the archives. Repowering with a Diesel could cost almost as much as your boat is worth.

mike this has been done but a good friend of mine a few years back to a 78 cat 27 which I now own I am damm glad he did this for I preferr the petter for many different reasons. anyways if I can be of help feel free to ask.Good Luck sail fast........ jake on falcon.

Universal Diesel

I have a 1990 C-27 and it has a Universal M3-20 diesel engine. I purchase my parts from Torresen Marine, they have a web site that talks about repowering C-27's with the new Universal M3-20B. Universal still powers most of the new Catalinas.

Here's a partial answer..

Hey Mike, I went to the sailboat show out here in Jack London Square last month and spoke with a local rep that deals with new/replacement diesel engines. It'll cost around $5,000 for the new engine. Sorry I can't remember exactly which model or company, but I have that info at the boat. I was told that the new engine fits perfectly where the Petter sits, bolt-for-bolt.I too have a Petter diesel and it works well on my '77 Cat 27. Except for the fact that I would love to get more speed out of it (hate being the last one out of the marina) it's fine and reliable. All I know is there isn't many boats out there with Petters anymore.. I'll have more info when I get back to the boat.
