Need help with spreader tip and boot

And yet another question on my 79 H30 project boat. I was going to get some spreader boots and was wondering what keeps the shroud from jumping out of the groove? There is about a 1/8" through hole next to the cable slot. What is the hole for? I am guessing something to hold the cable in place when the shroud gets slacked on the lee side. These tips are plastic so don't know if I even need a boot. Your guidance would be appreciated.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but was wondering about something like a spray on rubberized coating or plastic dip you find in big box stores to create a waterproof spreader boot: Black Rubber Coating Spray. Claims:
    • Latex-based synthetic rubber formula is flexible and stretchy
    • Can be sprayed, brushed or dipped onto painted surfaces
    • Air dries in as few as 30-minutes
    • 11 oz. can provide coverage for up to 5 sq. ft.
    • Flat sheen
    • Provides a comfortable, controlled grip that resists moisture, acids, abrasion, corrosion, skidding and slipping
    • Will not crack or become brittle in extreme weather conditions
    • Resists chemicals, impact and abrasion
    • Prevents electrical shock and vibration, resists heat and deadens sound

It appears to be for a roll pin, keeping the tip on the spreader.
I think...

A small bit of stainless steel seizing wire around the shroud above the spreader, passing through the hole and around the shroud below below the spreader will hold it all together. Maybe make a couple passes through the hole.

Back to the regularly scheduled discussion: It is mostly the rigging tension that holds the shroud in that groove. You can use Monel wire to seize the shroud to the spreader. And cover the assembly with a spreader boot.

My 1984 H27 Cherubini has the same spreader tip. There is no boot. The main purpose of a boot is to reduce chaffing of the jib when pulled in tight. On the H27, the jib never gets close enough to the spreader to chafe,, unless its flogging. Not sure if there is anything holding the shroud in the spreader grove other than preset tension.

The spreader boot protects the sail from being damaged by the spreader tip.... Sailmakers will also apply a reinforcement patch to the area where the sail may contact the tip... However, if the sail never comes in contact with the tip.... you could skip the boot... I wouldn't though... it's cheap insurance. The monel seizing wire that Shemandr mentioned is commonly used to secure the shroud to the spreader..... also cheap insurance.

The rubber boots will deteriorate over time and the tape is notorious for working loose... Over ten years ago I replaced the rubber ones with these polyester woven boots and they still look nice, no sign of wear..... really, really good product...

Thanks for all your responses. I ordered a small roll of .047 316 stainless lockwire. Probably buy a pair of boots too. It looks like the PO had boots that he painted black based on the black overspray still on the spreader.

That was my thinking when the fitting on the end of the spreader broke on my B235 w/ 110% jib.. That theory lasted until my spinnaker flew and caught on the broken piece. After $200 later for the spin repair...

Mine has the fine seizing wire that runs through small holes near the tip. I use rubberized friction tape to rap it all up for protection, but I sure do like those polyester ones that Joe uses! Where can I find them?

$21 on Amazon for the medium size. Just search Taylor Made spreader boot

I'd be concerned that the eliminated air could allow the stainless to corrode under that stuff.

I don't mean to hijack my own thread ;) but I seen a commercial about the new Flex Seal liquid. It looks to be a liquid rubber that you paint on. Might be great in some marine applications.
