Need help with H280 Mains measurement

I'm helping a friend order the Mains and had given the sailmaker the IJPE from this website.

Sailmaker is asking if the Luff is same as P and the Foot same as E or both are shorter than P&E?
I thought Sailmaker would know how IJPE are measured.
Can anyone help?

My guess is he is questioning if the present sail is what the IJPE SHOULD be according to Hunter.

He wants you to measure the present sail... or measure the boat.... since that is what a sail maker would do rather than rely on 3rd party data. Chances are everything will be the same.... but he's just practicing the "measure twice, cut once" method of getting it right the first time.

The IJPE specs are measurements of the rig, not the sail. Sails should be fit to the rig. I don't want to cast doubt on the sailmaker, but this is an odd question. It could be that your friend didn't understand what the sailmaker is looking for, but if I would go back to the him and clarify what he needs to know.

This is pretty simple. He want to use YOUR NUMBERS.

He uses his, and something sized wrong its on him. Yours, on you.

Also remember, JIPE numbers are simply MAX sizes before penalty. There is nothing that says your actual desired sail size could not be bigger. Or smaller.

but the number is given to sailmaker. Perhaps he just want to be sure the measurement given wasn't from tip of mast and boom.

But you just told him JIPE numbers? If yes I can see him asking if that's the size you want your sail. Often actual size IS shorter. Or bigger if you are sailing with a penalty.

I doubt this guy is racing, so penalties aren't perhaps in his sailing vocabulary. But, the sailmaker wants you to measure your boat and not go by the Hunter sail measurement specs, because, for some reason.....they can change......either by the manufacturer - especially on older designs, or by boat owners. Perhaps the P I E and J measurements offered by Hunter are correct and if the sail maker used that to build your main, everything would be right. But, not always and so it is always best to measure what you need and not what you presume you need. That way, as Jackdaw pointed out, if there is a problem it is your problem and not the sail maker's and you will have to pay for the modification to get it right. It is a good idea to buy through a dealer and then the dealer can do the measurement, if a boat owner feels uncomfortable doing it himself. Most sail makers have a measuring guide to go by. Enjoy the new sail.

Yes, if the sailmaker is asking the owner to measure the P and E, that makes perfect sense. The actual specs and published specs are often different. But from the way the question is posted, it sounds like the sailmaker wants the P and E spec compared to the sail, which makes a alot less sense to me.

Sounds to me like the good folks at the SBO store could help your friend immensely.

Will get my friend to take down his Mains for measurement. Safer that way. Kinda hassle to ship the Mains back to sailmaker if dimension is wrong let alone added cost.

Just be sure to tell the sailmaker these are dimensions from the sail, and not the IJPE specs.

If you measure your old sails, remember that the foot & luff bolt-ropes tend to shrink over time so you could end up with a sail that is smaller than your current sail when it was new. You might want to actually put a tape on your mast & boom.

A good sail designer can reverse engineer rig specs from an old sail, but yeah, it's less than optimal.

That said, tata duende is correct that you never want to make a new sail to match the measurements of your old sail. You'll end up with a brand new sail that's no better than your old, blown out one. :)
