Need help with furler halyard

Hey guys,

I need some advice on the halyard on my CDI FF4 roller furler. This furler has a halyard running through a slot in the luff extrusion. One end of the halyard is decored with a metal ferrule. You attach a messenger line to this end to raise the sail. The boat is new to me. Today we went to raise the jib, and about 3/4 of the way up, it got incredibly hard. At this point, the ferrule to messenger line tie-off is about 8 feet off the deck. I noticed there was no ferrule, just a halyard tied to the messenger line. It was also obvious that the halyard was starting to fray from the friction, so rather than risk it, I just dropped the sail to ponder my options.

I think my best bet is to replace the halyard with a new one (with ferrule) - but how do I replace the existing halyard without going aloft or dropping the mast? Not sure how to splice the new halyard so it goes over the sheave at the top without problem.

The other option would be to use the jib halyard on the mast to raise the sail. Feed the jib through the furler, but hoist it with the mast halyard. But if I do this, will I still be able to furl the sail?

Any advice is appreciated.

If you use the jib halyard on the mast it won't furl. The halyard will wrap around the foil/forestay.
I suspect there's something wrong with the way the halyard feeds through the top, around the sheave. Do you have a manual? There's one here:

I think you have to get the furler down so you can check / rebuild the top of the furler where the sheave is. It may be assembled wrong or the halyard is off the sheave.

Is the O'Day designed to be trailerable? I am assuming that your 25 is basically the same size as my 25. If so, just unstep the mast to work on it. We do it all the time with just two of us. I've also done it alone. You can also do it on the water if you need to.

Sam - I think you're right. I suspect the halyard is not fed properly. I do have the manual, thanks. Looks like the furler needs to come down to fix this!

Yes, it is trailerable.

Here's another thought -- it occurred to me last night that I could probably use a couple of halyards as temporary stays, disconnect the forestay, and slide the furler assembly down to inspect and work on it. Does this sound reasonable? Sorry for my "noob-ness".....I'm still new and learning.

If you can get it down, then that would be OK too!
But to get the top shackle undone, you'll probably have to go up the mast.
